Rem.

Plastic mags or metal mags? If you got the plastic ones, you got an old problem one. I think rem will send you metal mags for free. Walmart has mags for it too (at least they do here). Go to rimfire central. When I was researching those they said they had a lot of problems with the bolts into the slide rails being too tight and causing the rifle to stick. Loosen them all the way up and retighten just enough so it wont bind.

597

Thanks for the info,i do have the metal mags.Looking at the on the stores andit seems i can get new 10 round or 25 or 30 round mags

Run,
I had the same problem with my 597 that I purchased new about 5 years ago. I would shoot maybe 5 rounds out of it, cleaned it up and it sat in my gun . I got it out again and started shooting it a lot this year and had the same problems you have. I too went to rimfirecentral.com and there is a whole liost of things to get it shooting better listed there. I backed off the slide rails until I could just get the stock to fiot back over the screws( to loosen the rails).
I called Remington about 6 months ago and I told them I had the old type magazine and they didnt /wouldnt swap mine out for me but they would sell me a replacement magfor 15 bucks...I passed on that. On mine, the cheaper bulk 500 round ammo will hang and /or misfire. You have to make sure that the receiver and the bolt face are clean from burnt powder residue or else your gun will hang and not feed rounds out of the mag.
I shoot CCI mini mags out of mine now and they do a good job. Ive got a Tasco 3x9x40 on it and shoot to 100 yards with it. I went shooting this past Saturday and put about 100 rounds thru mine. At 50 yards with the CCI rounds , it will shoot about 3 and 1/2 inches high with me zeroed at 100 yrds.
Keep the barrel and recvr and bolt face clean and it will serve you well.
I had thought about buying me a 30 round banana clip for mine but just havent got to it yet :) Mine is fun to shoot.

597 difficulties...

Run 24 24--Bo't a 597 @ a gun sho myself--took it home, cleaned it all up, tightened everything, and poof, I had the same feeding problems you describe.

RF Central has all the answers, as pointed out. Now I run my slide rails loosey-goosey, and everything works just fine.

BTW, I have the Rem issue mags, of metal, some 3rd party mags of metal, and a plastic mag also--after cleaning and lubing each mag, have no feeding issues with any of 'em--ONCE I had the rifle itself adjusted properly.

I like the 597--Wish all the fun retro parts for a 10/22 would fit it!! :D
