Rem. receiver only?

Looking to purchase my first rifle and am really leaning towards the 700VS/PSS. Because I am very poor this time of year, I am thinking about purchasing piecemeal. So, I am considering first buying the barrel/receiver for now, then shopping around for a stock at a later time. I have been unsuccessful locating the B/R combo, and I know Rem. doesn't sell them outright. So, any opinions on what a poor boy should do?
Thanks for your time, regards, -Coop

You are wasting your time...........

Coop, NO ONE sells the Rem Varmint weight barreled action......I suggest you save your $$$....and buy a VLS if you can find one....( least expensive Varmint style)
or wait until you can afford the "whole", thing.......
You will save $$$$$$ in the long run,,,,,,,,,,,

If money is a problem piecemeal ain't the way to go. This route is more expensive than buying a complete rifle. Remington is coming out with an inexpensive bolt action complete with scope to retail for less than $400. It's call the model 710. Also keep an eye on the used gun market in your area. There are good deals out there if you look long and hard enough.

Brownells does sell the combo but only in sporter weights. These also go for as much as a complete rifle!

I you really want to go the piecemeal route, the next best option would be to look for a used, short action Model 700 at a gun show. Buy the cheapest one you can find and don't worry about condition. You can shoot this rifle while saving up for the rest of your project.

Next would be to buy a quality barrel blank from someone like Hart, Kreiger, Shilen, etc. Have a reputable gunsmith accurize the action and chamber and mount the barrel. You can just hog out the barrel channel on your old stock and keep shooting the rifle if you want.

Or you could wait a little longer until you can purchase the H-S Precision stock. Then take it to a good smith and have him put it together properly by blueprinting the action and have him finish the metal for you. Then have him bed the stock to the barreled action.

This will cost you a little more than a Model 700 PSS but you will have a rifle that should shoot circles around it.

Thanks for the info.
I am really interested in that Rem. 710. It is pretty much exactly what I've been looking for. What are any of your thoughts on 22" barrel as opposed to 26" and the fiber/teflon? receiver insert? I am hoping that they offer this in .308 soon. Any opinions on 30-06 in this setup?
Thanks again, regards, -Coop

What about the VLS or Sendero? They look to be similar to the VS. Are all these rifles identicle barrel/receiver and only differ on stock material? Can one paint or refinish a wood stock(VLS) to a camo pattern?

Thanks for helping a newbie,

Coop
