Dad left this rifle to me after he passed, its brand new only 4 rounds through it, what are the pro's /con's of this rifle if any?
other than it is kind'a heavy lol.

sorry...just searched it and found out what I needed to know....guess I better keep it spotlessly clean.

I wouldn't say "spotlessly clean" but don't drive around all year with it in the backwindow gunrack with the bolt open and the mag on the dash. When you allow the action to load up with sandy road grit, it does bad things to the innards. Counter to so many comments, I've used 742's and never found them to be selfdestructive if kept reasonably clean and lubed. In fact, I'm looking for a 6mm now but that's a rare duck.

I have owned a 742 for 15 years. Keep it clean-yes, spotless, not in my experience. Mine has probably 300 or more rounds of 180 grain 30-06 through it,,no problems so far. Some re-tell stories that they heard from someome else with different degrees of truth to either make a point, or to convince someone to buy rifle A over rifle B. Common gun sense, factory ammo properly seated rounds ( not too long in overall length) has always worked for me.

I sighted in two of them for my friends. .30-06 742's with cheapo Bushnell scopes on them. BOTH of those rifles shot better then most bolt action rifles I've shot. Absolute tack hammers. And semi-autos weren't supposed to group. (I have shot another one in .308 that wasn't so great and that was the fancy one).

They'll do the job.

Clean it, hunt with it, and don't try to make a battle rifle out of it.

They were designed as hunting rifles, not something for sustained fire. Treat it as such and it will treat you well.

#1
get the barrel nut wrench from Brownell's
#2 get the book from Brownell's
#3 clean it, Lubve it, get the 10 round mags and only load 8 rounds in them, just like an M-1 Garand
#4 ignore PPL that say you should junk your rifle

No it is not a GI combat rifle but it can be a very good civilian combat rifle. the plastic 10 round mags will not last, they chip crack etc the metal 10 round mags are not so great either, load them to 8 rounds and see how they work.
A semi-auto 30-06 will Always wake PPL-up and make them take notice! Several 5 rnd mags will be as effictive as 2- 10 rnders!

I love my 742. It is a 30-06 and is my go to hunting gun. Deer, elk and black bear. Never had a problem with it. Clean it every time you use it and don't drag it behind the truck on a dusty road, it will love you back.
