Rem 870P Purchase Info

Hi folks,
I am looking to get my first shotgun :D I have a couple of quick questions.
First, I have looked around in my area (south east NC) and only found one dealer that carrries police models, and they are over priced. So if anyone has a source on the net that they could recommend, that would be great. I have searched and not found much.

I did call Hopelite (shotgun news) and they have what I am looking for, however
their policy makes me a little nervous. ie no returns on a new purchase, their liability/service ends when it leaves their door ect. Has anyone done business with them? How did it go? Thanks in advance for any info.

Try: Belsco, Jerry's Sports Center, Sports South Inc., GT Distributors, and RSR.
I would start with RSR and Sports South.

Is there a Wal-mart or Bi-Mart usually pretty cheap when they go on sale. I think I paid $239.00 for an 870 express 18" 12 Gauge at Bi-mart.
 
Which model 870P was it and what did they ask for it? Here is the Remington le catalog to reference the model numbers. I got a 4407 18" bbl, 2 shot extension, park finish, speedfeed stock w/out stock mag tubes and paid around $535 last May. Local gunshop called an AZ dealer who carried them and in a few days it was in my hands. Imho, worth every penny.

Thanks for the info! I am looking into having another shop order one for me. Have to go talk to them friday or sat.

I also found a pretty good deal on a mossberg 590 A1 and may go that way.
I like the steel receiver on the 870 but I'm a lefty and the safety on the mossberg seems to be a better fit.

I was looking to pick up a 4421 and the guy wanted 600.00 for it, maybe I'm wrong but I'm thinking thats pretty pricey.
 
As far as I know WalMart doesn't sell the police models, and there is a difference. They get better parts.
 
Hoplite is a distributor and like almost all distributors, they primarily sell to FFL dealers.

Like almost all distributor's, they DO NOT have retailers policies.
i.e. They don't have returns or exchanges, they're not set up for retail, they're wholesalers.

You buy it, you take any problems up with the manufacturer, OR the FFL retailer you bought it from.
This is the same policy most any wholesaler in any industry follows.
Local dealers have customer relations policies, wholesalers wholesale to dealers.

This is the industry standard, so this isn't a shady or unusual policy.

In any event, problems with 870P Police guns right out of the box are RARE.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy a new gun from Hoplite.

Lat month he had a limited time special from his distributor and was selling the Remington 870P Police MAX for about $790 or so.
This is a full $100 less than anyone else I've found.

He's a member of the High Road, posting as "zrex".
 
Thanks Dfw, good info. I'm in the market for 870P #2 with wood furniture and have an e-mail on the way to Kevin. I'm all for avoiding state tax. Now all I have to decide is between a magazine extention or no and blue or parkerized.
 
I picked up a Remington 870 Express model for $289.00 last year. had the extion for the extra rounds.

I'm pretty sure you can order the 18" 870 express from Wal-Mart. No it doesn't have a P designation. Last time I checked anyway.

What parts get beefed up in the police guns?

BUY THE EXTENSION.
Remington's extension and barrel clamp are the best made.
You may want one later, and they are very expensive and difficult to buy after-market.

If you decide you don't want the extension, all you have to buy is a fairly cheap and easy to get standard length spring, an old style magazine cap, and a steel spring retainer.

As for finish, Remington says their parkerized finish is 60% more durable and rust-resistant than bluing.

It's your money, but if you want the best defensive pump, it's an 870 Police Model.
If you get the PMax, you'll probably want to replace the Remington barrel clamp, it positions a sling directly in front of the under-barrel light. There are other side-mount sling swivel mag clamps that work better. Otherwise, without a light, the Remington clamp is fine.
