Rem. 870 question

I bought a Remington 870 magnum HD shotgun and I want to change out the handguard. The nut on the magazine seems to be rather tight. Is there a certain wrench I need to remove it or do I just need to put a little more muscle in to. Possiblyput a peice of cloth between the pliers and the magazine, so not to scratch or ruin the nut.

It normally is just hand tight. You could use a belt (rubber) type wrench. I would not use pliers. Just sounds like it is a little tighter than normal. It should come off with added force.

An easy "spanner wrench" can be made of scrap steel.
You need a piece about 1/8" thick that will fit between the notches.
Use a pair of Vise-Grips to turn it.

Be wary of using the needle nose pliers trick.
A number of people have reported trying this, slipping and ruining the very thin fore end tube.

getting handguard off

Okay, I'm going to eventually replace the handguard with something else. How do I do this? I'm able to get the magazine tube nut off and take off the barrel, but what about the nut holding the handguard on?

Ok, I see your problem. The hand-guard will then come off, but first you have to depress the two spring loaded shell & bolt stops inside the breach. You get to them by pushing down the shell loading foot plate (with slide/bolt in open position), then just push them to one side and the hand-guard comes free. These are long metal tabs along the inside wall of the breach housing. Just push them in and pull on the hand-guard. There is no additional nut holding the hand-guard. The manual explains better then me.

You need to also remove the fore end and action bars from the gun.

Check the owner's manual on how to completely field strip the 870.
If you don't have one, you can get one online on Remington's web site, or they'll send you one for free.

Look inside the front end of the action bar and hand guard assembly.
You'll see a smooth round nut with two notches on the very front end.

With the fore end assembly off the gun, make a "spanner" from scrap steel about 1/8" thick.
Just cut a strip about 3/4" to 1" inch wide, long enough to fit inside the mouth of the round nut and between the two notches.

Grip the spanner with a pair of Vise-Grips, and use the spanner to unscrew the nut.

Pull the wood forward and off the action bar and tube assembly.

Dfariswheel is right, Sorry, I did not give good advice. There is a second nut that needs a spanner to remove that hold the action bars. I learned too.
