Again I call on your valued opinions and advice.

I wandered into the local sporting goods store and looked at:

$239 Remington 870 Express Synthetic 18" barell 3" 12gauge mag capacity 4 with a Bead sight

and a

$279 Winchester 1300 Defender 18" barell 3"magnum 12gauge mag capacity 8 with a Tru glow sight

Primarily for defensive purposes...... I would like to add a light sling maybe ghost ring sights in the future....

Might hunt deer with it, although I do have another semi-auto for that purpose.

Just wondering what your thoughts are. Thanks in advance.

Probably 90% of the "Serious" shotguns in the US are 870s. Unmatched reliability, durability, and low cost(Based on cost per use).

The Winnies are nice shotguns. Older 870s are great ones, newer 870s are as good as the competition.

I'd get the 870, more flexibility and all of the above qualities...

Another nice thing about the 870 is that due to it's popularity and mass quantities in circulation, there are hundreds of accessories available that you can add to it.

Can't go wrong with either choice. Had an 870 which I sold to someone who had to have a 3 1/2 magnum. Got a steal on my 1300 defender which I have left box stock. Both work great. For a pure defensive role, the Defender is ready to go. If you are cool with 4 + 1 in the 870, its ready to go as well. Adding a mag extension to the 870 is a little bit of a chore and there is also the issue of the key safety--but that is replaceable as well.

A search of the archives will unveil a wealth of knowledge...

Bought the 1300

I tried both guns again in the store and played with the safeties and such.

I just liked the feel of the Winchester 1300 Defender.

All I'm going to add is a light and I side shell carrier so I like the fact that I now have the thing loaded with 8 shots sitting right here beside me.

Thanks for the input tho.
