Rem 870 magazine spring

Trying to fix up my 870 express 12 gauge. One of the problems is the magazine spring collapses on itself sometimes and it won't feed shells. You have to take it apart to fix it. Can't figure out what would cause this. I know it's a common problem because two friends had the same issue. Any ideas? Maybe just a new spring? Also sometimes it won't eject shells right. They will stick and jam when the new shells pops in. The extractor is visibly worn so I'm guessing that's the problem.
 
Please check me if you don't agree and will relate to you what is happening to mine. I don't think you mean that it is collapsing. Instead, it compresses too much, when you try to load a full tube and then fails to feed as there is not enough spring pressure left. For whatever reason, my spring has lost it's Memory. i am going to order a new spring from Midway as they only cost a few bucks.

The spring gets bunched up on its self and I have to pull it apart. I did order a new spring so we'll see. Ordered a magazine follower too.

It would seem like that but I've seen it happen to 2 other 870's. I haven't used the gun in years. Just tinkering around.
 
Talked to other people with the same problem. It's common when using shells with a lot of recoil. Basically the express is just junk all around. It's a starter gun. They don't last.
 
The only time I have run into this problem, is when the spring was too long for the tube. It happened when I switched from a 7-shot extension back to the standard issue and I forgot to change springs. Another point to make, is that the spring should be free to rotate with no binding at the muzzle end. The cup at the breech end should not give you a problem. The new spring that you ordered should confirm this problem.

Count the number of coils to make sure the new spring realy is longer. Many times a spring will take a "set" from use or being under tension. Recoil operated auto's are famous for that, and a mag spring is always under tension.
 
No, the express is NOT junk. Just a few parts differentiate it from the Police version. The metal parts are all made form the same steel, etc. Go to http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewforum.php?f=7, and you will see that the folks there hold them in high regard, even for HD and tactical uses. Hoever, many people buy several mag springs and rotate them periodically
