Rem 870 for $240.

After looking at the O/U prices, I realized that I am not going to be able to get one of those for a while so I wanted to pick up a good, inexpensive pump. I was thinking of maybe getting the Rem 1100 but they were out of stock and price is a big issue.

I was looking at Sports Authority today for a new shotgun for clays. I found a Rem 870 with wood stocks/fore grip, 26 or 28" bbl. It looked like it would only fit 2 3/4 shells but I only want to shoot clays so I really dont need it to handle the 3" mags.

I dont know the specifics b/c there was no one working at the counter and i got tired of waiting. So aside from the poor customer service, is this a good deal on the Shotgun? I currently have a MB500A but its more for busting doors and clearing houses then shooting clays.

Any info and advice would be great.

All new Remington 870s can take 3" shells, the Super Magnums can take 3.5" shells. Thats about normal for an 870 from what I have seen for prices. You might want to consider the 870 Combo package: either a 28" "bird" barrel (removable choke and vent rib) and a 20" IC rifle sighted barrel, or a 26" bird barrel and a 20" rifled, rifle sighted barrel. Cost should be about $330 and $350 respectively for the combo packages. Try your nearest Walmart for better prices, they usually beat everyone else.

I looked at Walmart and they didn't have a very good selection at all. Thanks for the info on the combo packages. Ill keep my eye for those.

When you are lookin for a specific item and don't see it on the rack at a chain store....ask if they have what you want in the stock room. Sometimes pleasant suprise awaits the asker.

You may want to consider buying a used 870,CC. Since the things never seem to wear out, you won't be getting a junker, and sometimes you can get a good deal on a classic.

One gent I shoot trap with bought a 10 yr old 870 TB trap gun that had never had a round through it. The previous owner had won it at a raffle, and since he was fond of lighter kicking autos, never uncased it. It was put up for sale when he retired to Fla. Price was $360,compared to a new list price of $550.

"Nother guy I know brags on his $125 field grade of late 60s vintage, with nice wood and in great shape. He got a trap bbl for it that cost more than the gun.

Even police turnins are beat up outside, and oft near new inside, and can serve as the base for a dedicated Trap, Hunting, or "Serious" shotgun. Two of mine started like that.

HTH...

Thanks again for the tips. There is a gun show at the end of December and I am going to look for an 1100 or an 870. When I asked at Sports Authority how much an 1100 cost they told me around $600.

The 870 I looked at came with a Modified Choke only. I would have to buy the others. :( This Sporting clay stuff is confusing. :D

I actually prefer pumps to autos but you never know. I shot a friends 1100 and loved it, I also shot his 870 and loved that too.

Tomorrow I try my MB500A at some skeet. :D Second time in my life I have shot Skeet. I cant wait.

Thanks again.

My wife shoots a 20 ga. 870 and breaks a good number of clays without any mechanical problems. Unfortunately for her..and me.. I kept modifying the stock for fit until I completely ruined the stock.

Go back to Wal-Mart to see if they have Remington 1100 on sale. I got one several months ago for $329 (maybe $349) and it came with 28" barrel and one Modified Rem Choke.
