A buddy bought Rem 740, 30/06 against my advice. I had enough of Rem 742
problems years ago and have no use for any Rem auto rifles since demise of 81.
The problem is when ejecting empties it is stoving up brass at case mouth and
neck area. I have had 740s but never worked on one. Does anyone have had
experience with this or know reason. Shop is telling him that was nature of the
gun. That's BS. It's not short stroking which causes jams. I think problem has
to be in ejector/ extractor function. Any Ideas, my best one is to get his money
back. Some call this series of Rem rifles Home Grown Assult Rifles. I call them
Insult to Rifles.
 
Clearly you mentioned that the spent case is "stove-piping" before complete ejection of the spent case. Correct?

That tells me that the extractor is letting go of the spent case prior to complete ejection of the empty case. And, I agree with you, It's not the nature of the firearm, it's a problem these rifles will have if the chamber is pitted, or the extractor is worn and fails.

Extractors are no longer available from Remington for the 740, or 742. To replace an extractor you would need a new extractor and extractor rivet, and it does help to have the fixture used to hold the bolt while the rivet is staked to hold the extractor in place, in the bolt face. So, it can be fixed.
 
Thx SGW, that confirms what I thought. I didn't know exactly what it was but it
is not the nature of the rifle. I don't want to mess with it and am telling him to
take it back. I have never had a 740 apart, nor replaced extractor in 742 or 760.
I think I have a new extractor for 760. Would it be same as 740 ? I have a stash
of Rem parts but are for 1970-90 models.
 
That's funny because that's my term for Remingtons in general. There are 3 brothers all older than me who I ran around with since I was a kid. They were Remington nuts and were
the reason I bought a 742 and 870 when I was a kid. All gun work was done at my house.
When I got married and bought my own house the reloading was all done at my house. I
have a 4 drawer file cabinet in shop. Top drawer is parts sheets for fishing reels and outboard motors, two middle drawers are gun parts catalogs and the owners booklets that
come with new guns. Bottom drawer is the owners manuals for Chainsaws, power tools ect.
My buddies always want me to "file" their owners booklets because they always loose them.
Just to pull their string I added Remington to label on that bottom drawer and Rem stuff is filed with leaf blowers.
 
If you have an extractor for the same case head diameter, yes, it will work. Cases with the same head diameter, .308, .270, .243, 6 MM, .30-06, are all the same head diameter, so extractors are the same. You will need a new rivet also.
