REM 722 What do you know?

I'm interested in picking up a REM 722 in .308, I found it in a little out of the way pawn shop... $395. Is this a good price. The wood look excellent and the blueing looks good. The front sight is still on though the rear has been taken off and there is a 3x9 weaver scope. Very smooth action and light trigger. Is this a good deal? I looked in the archive and didn't find much on the 722. The site is a wealth of information, I picked up a 788 because you guys said it's an super accurate rifle.. I 'm glad I did, because it's a tack driver. Now, I need your help on info for the 722... any negatives? what positives? is it a good price? Is it any better than the 700? or Win 70? or Savage 110? Any info is appreciative..

722's were made from 1948-62, short action predecessor to the 700. For the standard rifle, it is overpriced by about 200. If its a deluxe version (better wood and checkering), it is overpriced by about 100. The scope really adds no value and the missing rear sight detracts. 722's were and still are fine rifles. If it had the rear sight, box, and papers and was like new, it would be an OK price. JMO

Thanks for the input, my other choice is a Howa 1500 in 308 for $300....I might as well save up for a 700PSS or something more expensive

I've yet to see stuff in pawn shops that didn't have a way-too-high asking price. The deal is to shoot him a low-ball offer and hang as tough as you can.

I'd say that if he won't deliver at around $200, walk away...

The 721/722 rifles are basically plain-vanilla critters, but very good hunting guns.
