Anyone using the 700P LTR (light tactical rifle)?

.223 or .308?

How's accuracy? How's the recoil in the .308?

Comments?

My Little Black Rifle

Hello,

I have a LTR in 308 cal , Right off the bat its a keeper !!

the rifle weighs in at 11 lbs. loaded
the feel and fit compared to a PSS , the rifle isnt front heavy
it aims very well off hand and the stock is very comfortable.
the felt recoil is alittle more than a PSS and less than
a 24 inch Savage Tac 110 in 308 cal. the rifle . the rifle shoots
7/16 group at 100 on a bench , i have shot milk jugs out to 300 yds with ease . i shoot handloads 168 Sierra match with 41.4 of IMR 4064 with a AOL of 2808 , that chronos at 2540 fps. i will list the way the rifle is set up . may try it out this deer season .

Leupold 3.5X10 40mm LR Tact M1 Luminous USMC mil-dot / Scope Smith Anti-Reflection Device with Butler Creek flip-up lens covers mounted with Badger Max 50 30mm Rings on MSP Bases .

Timney trigger set @ 2 3/4 lb.
Harris bipod 6-9 inch
Taylor Sling.

I just wanted to say very nice rifle GrandPa.

JNewell as already stated the LTR is a very nice rifle and will serve you well. My friend had one but sold it because he was getting a house and needed stuff. It was pretty accurate though and recoil isn't that bad at all.

I'm curious about the recoil because I had a surplus .303 Jungle Carbine years ago that was really horrible to fire, and I think it had a 20" barrel.

J, the recoil on the LTR will be nothing like that. They're a little heavier and with a decent butt pad unlike the brass or steel on the Jungle Carbine. And if you get the .223 it will be even less obviously.

LTR is a nice rifle

I just went to the range this weekend with mine for the first time and it was sweet! I choose it for its scout/sniper attributes in a package that can actually be carried in the field without undue strain on my part. It will make a great hunting gun as well as a tactical gun.
I shot federal 168grn match rounds with good results. One sub moa 5 shot group and a few over as I am still polishing up my rifle markmanship abillities. Recoil was not a problem for me and I have had problems with rifle recoil in other guns like 7mag :(. (a great round but I developed some bad habits with it)

my package is
700 LTR with Leupold VariXIII 3.5-10X40 Mildot Tactical M1 1" mounts and rings, Harris Bipod.
Professional mount job with ring lapping and trigger job to 2.5lbs

Thanks for the info so far...

I also saw a pseudo-scout angle here...are there holes in the barrel, in addition to the receiver bridges? I'm wondering about mounting a 1.5-4x or so scope forward of the front ring.

What's the magazine capacity of the .308 version? The Remington site doesn't give a mag capacity!

The LTR has a five round magazine (non-detachable). The rifle is way heavy for a scout, 7.5 pounds out of the box. Add rings, base, scope, sling, and bipod and you're over 9 pounds. There are no provisions for a forward mount, and the third swivel lug is positioned up forward, not in front of the trigger guard, as for a Ching sling. It's a great great rifle, but it is in no way a scout.

How much should a scout rifle weight? Do you need a light-barrel to make it a scout? I have been thinking of finding a tactical .308 rifle, when I get some money. How many $$$ did you guys pay for the LTR?

Molon labe,

How much should a Scout weigh?

Well, if the Steyr is anything to go by, 7 lbs. Keep in mind that includes scope, mount, sling and two (empty) magazines.

Ever picked one up? I had a toy air rifle that weighed more.

I paid $799 for my LTR, I have seen them as high as $875. I imagine that you might be able to find a good deal for 750 if you shopped around. PRK prices ofcourse.

My LTR is a keeper also, 308. Often shoot 5 shot groups at 100 yrds of .5" or less. I think I have done that at <.3" once or twice!

Recoil is softened by the Pachmyer (I think) recoil pad; no problem at all.

Jeff Cooper says that a scout rifle should weigh no more than 3 kilos (6.6 pounds), including everything but ammo. I think he would say that the weight is more of a defining feature of a scout rifle than the intermediate eye relief scope. The emphasis in his rifle classes is on the snap shot, which he trains students for by having them shoot clay pigeons in flight at 25 to 50 yards.
