Rem 700 SPS Tactical

I have pretty much decided on getting an SPS Tactical, it's just which one that I can't pick.

This is going to be a strictly inside of 200 yards rifle. I will be doing something for iron sights on it. It will have a muzzle brake/flash hider, 2" long or so.

I may go through the process of getting a suppressor down the road.

I am considering:

16.5" barrel chambered in 300AAC (avid reloaded with a ton of .223 brass)
16.5" barrel chambered in 308WIN (not really too fond of this combination)
20" barrel chambered in 308WIN

What would you do?

What are you planing to shoot? Targets or game?

I dont really get the draw of 300 BLK outside of the AR... it makes sense there to throw heavier bullets out of a mostly unmodified AR.... but not constrained by those physical demensions, it is just flat out surpassed by other options. You may save a couple cents on brass and powder over the 308, but the 308 ballistics are just so much better. If you are hunting, the 308 can be loaded down to match the 300BLK ballistics, but the 300BLK can never do what .308 can.

If, on the other hand, you are just punching paper at 200yd, why not consider .223? With the cheaper projectile, brass, and less powder, it is much less expensive than either of the .30 cals. Recoil would be softest of the bunch, and you would have just as good of accuracy at the range you will be shooting.

I tend to agree on the 300, and have removed it from my list of choices. I don't dislike .223, but I just want this one to be a 30 cal. Also, there is a SLIGHT chance that I would use it for hunting in the future (very slight), CT requires .243 or larger on private land.

Mine is in .223 with a 16.5" barrel, but I added a Levang linear comp so it's closer to an 18" length.

If you're going to add a suppressor the shorter 16.5" would probably work in your favor.

I can respect that. I have a 700 sps varmint in .308 and I love it. I replaced the flimsy stock and it will shoot sub MOA all day long... better when Im on my game. I wont lug my beast out hunting, but the shorter barrel with a lighter stock should be more packable.

You're going to ADD iron sights? I think it would be cheaper and easier to get an iron-sighted gun. Why .308 win?

If you want iron sights, get a CZ 550 FS in 6.5x55. Short, light, handy, beautiful and will do everything the .308 will do and more at any range - well except provide myriads of factory load choices, admittedly. And has incredibly-good iron sights.

If you want, you can put a rear peep sight at the very back, using the rear sight base screws.

Or are your irons just for backup or what? Have you considered a Ruger Frontier or Savage 10 FCM Scout?

Well, heck for that matter, you can get the CZ 550 FS in .308 too!

I have one of each and both have been restocked with HS Precision stocks, pillar and glass bedded,Timney triggers and Steiner scopes. Both shoot amazingly accurate but do different things,I like shooting .308 cal guns and I can shoot loads in the 300 BLK bolt gun that will not function in a AR,I have a D.D. AR 15 300BLK for sub sonic, suppressed shooting. The bolt rifle is shot more at the silhouette range is just plain fun to shoot steel turkeys @ 385m with 110 gr.bullets 18 grs. of powder. You won't be loading up the 300 BLK to .308 Win. levels but also you won't be loading .308 Win down to 300BLK levels either.Twice the powder charge in the .308 Win.I have had a lot more fun shooting the 300 BLK at 400 yds or less over that I use the .308 Win.

Im HEAVY into 300blk in AR platforms but chose a 308 bolt gun as my suppressed shooting bolt platform

My thinking was this...

I already load both calibers (so that dosent matter)
I can load a 308 bolt gun to do things a 300blk would NEVER be able to do
A 308 with Trailboss is just as quiet (maybe more so) then a 300blk with 1680 (which is my AR subsonic powder)
Weight is not and issue, i could have gotten an equally light 308 to a 300 (rem700, moss Mvp, ruger scout)

So the 308 just seemed more versatile.

I completely agree, the 308 is much more versatile.

I was considering a 300blk but nemesis had a great point in his post; a 308 can be loaded down to 300blk levels, but 300blk can't come close to the super sonic performance of a 308.

20" barrel chambered in 308WIN

11/111 hog hunter.

That's exactly what I was going to suggest after reading the first post.

20" barrel, already has a threaded muzzle, already has iron sights.

I know you were pretty dead set on an SPS but the Hog Hunter seems like it was almost taylor-made for what you want. And just for the record I'm not trying to talk you into a Savage over a Remington. I'm not in love with any one brand. I have a couple Savages and several Remingtons and I love them all. I will say however that my newest Remington was made in 1994 so I can't attest to the quality of the new stuff. All I have to go on is what I've heard and seen my friends buy and it seems QC and accuracy is getting a bit spotty, especially with the SPS line.

Savage 10P-SR

I really like mine.
18" heavy barrel
5R rifling
5/8-24 threaded muzzle
.308 Win
I have a JP tactical comp on mine. Friend has one and is awaiting his suppressor.

i loke the sps tactical lines

if it were me i would get the tactical aac i believe it is made with both a 16.5 and 20 inch barrel

i do agree with other on the savage though. cheaper than the remington already set up with what you want and will shoot just as well

I have a SPS in .300AAC Black out and a XCR IN .300 Win mag . The SPS from 50 to 300 yards and the XCR from 300 to 1100 . This Rem 700 recall sort of ****** me off but I'm going to check out my rifles and ignore it .
