Rem 700 or Winchester Model 70 in '30-06? Opinions on these rifles?

More accurate out of the box: Remington.

By far, the better trigger, with adjustments for overtravel, creep and pull: Remington.

Yes, I do own both.

I second WalterGAII opinion. That is unless you have stumbled on an unsold, unfired, pre 64 Mod 70! :D :D Yea I know dream on.

The only Remington I have is an ADL in .308. I'm less than pleased with the plastic stock. I still have to play with the trigger; it has a bit of creep which I hope to be able to take out. It sure ain't no Canjar!

So far, nothing groups within 1-1/2". Factory or handload. I'm now using a Weaver V3, so the low power might play a part. However, a 4X12 Swift did no better...

So, BDL or better, maybe so. I like the "feel" of the Model 70 better; dunno how the modern stuff shoots. But, anything's fixable.

Have to go along with WalterGAII on this one 100%.
Buy the Remington and never second guess your decision.
And yes, I own both and my Win. is a Pre '64 lightweight in .30-06 mfg. in 1961 and there were 528,020 made that year(ref. Madis Winchester Book). :D
That was when Win. really made a rifle.

Hi 45automan (great handle BTW :)
I hunt with a Rem. 700 Moutain in 30.06 It's lightweight (till you add base, rings, & scope) and avgerages MOA esily at 100 yards. I like the factory trigger and have not touched it.
If it were up to me though, it would be offered with a peep/ghost rear and patridge style front sight in addition to the drilled and tapped reciever. I don't need a scope at 25-100 yards in the woods.
All in all a nice factory rifle; I ain't gettin rid of it!
By the way, it has a Wally World Redfield 3X9; any one wanna trade for a plain ol' 4X of similar quality? :)
Bob
p.s. My Dad hunts for Elk with the same in .270; who does that remind you of?

Modern stuff : Rem. 700 ...love it.
Reply to pre-'64 mod. 70 Win. :I wish I could affort it. -----------Dem tangs is real purdy.

I've owned several 700's throughout the years and can't really find an ill thing to say about any of em. For the most bang for your buck on a right out of the box rifle I doubt you'll do any better. I've heard it said and have read that the 700 action is the strongest out there, I believe it. My Pa owns a couple pre-64 mod. 70's. A .270 built in 1948 and a 30-06 built in '53. Both are real nice looking, but neither are as accurate as my 25 year old ADL .270. I've also heard it said that the pre-64's punished the shooter more because of the shape/style of stock they have. I can attest for these two that is true. The .270 of my Pa's is about a pound heavier than my ADL but still seems to kick quite a bit more. Yeah they're purdy, but if you're wanting a good solid using rifle, go with the 700.

Lots of folks also say that from about 1960 on, Winchester's quality control went to crap. Many guns were just slapped together with poor-fitting parts. I think if you look at enough of them you can start to see a difference in quality in guns built along in that time period.

JMC, my Winchester dates of manufacture book says there were only 41189 built in 1961, starting with 504258 and ending with 545446.

A quote from muleshoe "Lots of folks also say that from about 1960 on, Winchester's quality control went to crap. Many guns were just slapped together with poor-fitting parts. I think if you look at enough of them you can start to see a difference in quality in guns built along in that time period." ......................... I had a friend in about 1982 or so that bought a brand new Mod. 70 in .243 Win. for his son, at a gunshop in the New Orleans area on a Sat. night. On Sunday morning they came out to the range and it would not fire. Just click! When we checked it out we found that the firing pin hole in the bolt was drilled so far off center that the firing pin was hitting the case and not the primer. It was just barely missing the primer. I know that is not the standard, but if that slipped by I wonder how many other things slipped by? I am not saying that Remington may not have some of the same problems but I for one have never seen them.

Yes, from what I've seen/heard Winchester's QC problems carried on thru the late 80's/early 90's. I think nowadays they do make a fine rifle, but for a lot of older shooters such as myself, their reputation of making junk is not easily forgotten. The new mod. 70's are probably great rifles but I'll never own one, for the same kind of money I'll buy the proven quality of a 700.

muleshoe,

You are correct. I typed my serial # instead of the quantity! Wrong column.

Thanks...
