Rem 700 Cleaning

On my new rifle, I am seeing a carbon build-up on the end of the bbl, at the bolt face. I had to chip it away with a dental pick. Is this common? How to prevent?

Thanks again to Walter and friends for helping me find this 700VLS. I have about 100 rnds thru it so far. Floated the bbl, and a basic bedding job. Have shot a couple of .5" groups while working up various loads. And hit a quarter last week, at 200 yrds!

Put the dental pick away. NOW.

Call Sinclair International, and order some Butch's Bore Shine. They'll know what you're talking about. While you're at it, get bronze bore brushes, etc., along with their shooting and loading book.

Trust me. I'm a deacon in the Quarter Sect of the Church of the MOA.

Glad you're enjoying that VLS. I'm still waiting for my scope to come back from Burris, but will probably be up and running next week. I also use Butch's Bore Shine. One caveat; it does contain ammonia and will deteriorate bronze brushes.

I don't advocate the use of bronze brushs - unless you have an extreme build up of jacket fouling or carbon.

In the case of carbon build up it is extremely hard to get rid of once it has accumulated.

Try using JB's BORE PASTE. Ever use moly coated bullets? worth a try if you have not.

I have a 6mm ack imp [Shilen barrel] that has not and will not ever see a bronze brush. Clean your rifle every time you shoot, use a routine your satisfied with, and use a good lube to coat the inside of the barrel once your done [G-96 lube] is the absolute best i've found for that poepose.

Also, get a one piece cleaning rod [Deweys] if you don't already have one. NEVER use a jointed cleaning rod to clean a rifle barrel. They will ruin a barrel faster than anything i know of.

Hope this helps. 12-34hom.
