Rem 700 BDL checkering - uneven lightening over 30 yrs

I have a 700BDL with the super glossy epoxy? finish from the mid-70's. The checkering on the left side of the rifle is dark like the rest of the stock, but on the right side it is light tan like it has no finish. Probably layed on the same side under my Dad's bed for most of those 30 years.

What is the best product to use to treat the uneven color of the checkered areas? Both grip and forearm are affected on the same side. A friend recommended simple boiled linseed oil but I wanted to check here for advice. Thanks!
