Rem 700, 308 vs 300WM

I was wondering, if given the choice between a Remington 700 .308 SPS Varmint Heavy Barrel, and a Remington SPS 300 Win Mag what would you choose?

The purposes for these rifles are elk between 100-250yds and paper at 600-1000yds.

I am trying to work up a pro con list so any advice would be great.
 
For the paper to the 600-1000yrd. id go with the 300 win.
Its a little harder for the .308 to get there. But i peronallt prefer the .308
300 win has a little too much kick for me. Not too sure about elk not too big of a hunter. Hope it helps.
 
I say 308. It's more economical. Less recoil. Less barrel wear.

I was actually in this same decision process not too long ago. I chose the 700ADL Varmint in 308. It's a dream to shoot. Even though it's a heavy barrel the weight is very similar to my Marlin Guide Gun.
 
I'm not dragging a heavy barreled rifle through elk country. I'd go with the 300 Win Mag SPS over the 308 SPS with the heavy barrel.
 
The heavy berrel is alot more accurate tho.. You can also get the .308 in varment with a longer lighter barrel. The heavy barrel helps with recoil and heat. But the lighter barrels do have more of a barrel jump. But are better for the hike. They both can come with a heavy or varment barrel.
 
I would go with the 308. I don’t know what your experience level is but for target the 300 can be brutal.
I don’t have a 300 but shoot a light 700 with 7mm Mag and on the bench, 10 rounds are my limit.:eek:
If you reload you can load the 300 down to 308 levels but you won’t get the accuracy.
 
The heavy barrel isn't more accurate. It will move less due to heat when shooting quickly, but that won't matter for hunting.

Plus the balance on those heavy barrel SPSs is awful. They're really barrel-heavy.

All depends on how u like ur rifle to balance. For me the heavy barrel gives me less movement on my part giving me a steadier hold.

It isn't Remingtons heaviest barrel. I have a stainless 308 barrel off of a 40-X. That defintely weighs more than the varmint barrel. FWI my varmint feels to be about the same weight as my Marlin Guide Gun.
 
two excellent calibers. you can hunt elk at those distances with either. 600-1000 yards is a big range but both will do that as well. however, the 300 wm is such a flat shooting round that it will go much further.

I would say that if you are on a tight budget go with the 308, but if money is no issue, the 300 wm is an awesome round and I'd go for that.
 
For sure the 300 mag, carrying a heavy rifle up and down the hills ain't for me.

By the way, if interested, I saw a used Remington 700 classic at Fin Feather Fur Outfitters Ashland Ohio today in 7mm Weatherby mag

I guess the balance of a gun is more of a personal preference because I love the way my SPS varmint balances all that weight out front helps me keep it steady.
 
For Elk, the 300 will give 180 Partitions 2900fps in a 24" barrel. If I were going to use the 308, it would be in a sporter rifle with a 22" barrel.
