Rem 700 .243 to 6.5-284 Conversion

I have remington 700 CDL chambered in .243 win I want to convert to a 6.5-284 Norma.. I know the 6.5-284 has the same case head as a .308 win family. Do I simply swap barrels and go or is there more involved??
 
From my limited knowledge of the parent cartridge, I know that it was originally designed to match the .270win/.280 rem performance in a short action.. It was made specifically for the model 88/100 winchester rifles..
 
I just did some poking around on one of the benchrest forums and saw that you can use a short action for a .284 but doing so limits how long a bullet can use and how far you can set it out. Since most benchrest shooters like to use the really long 6.5mm pills to get the best BC and seat them pretty shallow at that, you probably would want to rethink going 6.5-284 in a short-action chamber.
 
I rechamberd a M700 from 243 to 6mm-284 simply by rinning a finish reamer into the chamber.
worked real well.
Shot the rifle for a long time and after 2000 + rounds
had to re-barrel the rifle, then I went with 6.5 - 284
I liked the 6mm a little better.

Magazine box on a 700 short action is 3.00", people who use the short action 700 for 6.5-284 generally lengthen the magazine box. What's the point? Use a long action.
 
Sounds like I should throw another .243 barrel on it and build the 6.5 out of another longer action... Never been able to get this .243 to group, I like the caliber but hate Remington for letting a rifle leave the plant with such a low quality tube on it...
 
If you want something more potent that the .243, put on a .260 or .260AI. It will give you that great 6.5mm BC but won't require anything other than a barrel change.
