Rem 14 1/2

I have a desire to get a Rem in 38-40, is this a good idea or should I change my wish list.
I have a great liking for the 38-40 so a 44-40 is out.
How scarce are these rifles and what kinda price am I looking at? Are they durable if shooting heavy loads?
I reload for the 38-40 with lots of components on my shelf so thats not a consideration.

Remington 14 1/2 rifles in 38-40 are fairly common (as common as any rifle that hasn't been made in 75 years, I suppose). But they are not super strong, so don't try hot rodding it, you will break the ears off the bolt camming surfaces. Standard 38-40 loads will be fine, though.

My comment as to heavy loads referenced some old loading manuals for the Win 92 which gave vel of 1600 fps plus. All of my current loads are based on the SA Colt 73 data that can be safely increased. Presently my heavy loads are 180 grain lead over 7.5 Unique.
Thanks for any info.

here,s my 14 -1/2 saddle ring thumb nail safety carbine. i have worked up a load of 10gr unq. with a 200gr cast bullet with no problems at all( work up in your rifle) eastbank.
