Rem 1100 w/18" barrel?

My wife likes the 1100 12ga but wants a shorter barrel. I know the legal length is 18" barrel so I was wondering if there are any problems getting an 1100 to work reliably with an 18.5" barrel using both light field loads and heavy buckshot?
This would be primarily for home defense, not hunting.

I doubt if it would be a problem. No experince with a shorter than 18" 1100, but I've seen quite a few 11-87s with 14" tubes running reliably.

I have used 1100 for 3 gun comps since 86 and earlier on skeet. 1100's don't like barrels below 21". You CAN get them to work (at least with buck & slugs) below that but it takes some port modifacation. They won't cycle reliably field loads with short barrels either. Not downing 1100's , just a quirk of a superior gun design! Browning Auto fives are the same in this regard also. 2.5" is not an issue in ANY real life situation, only for movie commando's on small screens! :p

We have two 1100's here at casa del 9mm and they both wear 21" twin-bead barrels. They both run well with no recorded problems. The 20 ga. gets used a whole lot more than the 12 as it is the bride's favorite shooter.
It is a nice handy length as well, IMHO.
