REM 1100 firing pin

I recieved a remington 1100 12g as a hand me down which was incredibly dirty. Was told it would not cycle correctly and would not fire. After a good, complete cleaning the action cycled as it should, but, it would not fire. Hammer cocked and fell. Disassembled again and noticed the firing pin in the bolt would not protrude completely. Ordered a new one and same problem, firing pin not long enough to protrude through the bolt to strike primer. The firing pin is approximately 2.945 inches long and the bolt is approximately 3.34 inches, leaving a big gap for it to hit the primer. What am I missing?

Thanks in advance, you guy's are great.

It's an inertia firing pin, it's supposed to be shorter than the bolt. Take the firing pin out and clean out the hole in the bolt. Also, check the little plastic sleeve in there to make sure it's not swollen or cracked. 1100s are very simple, there are only a few things that can go wrong with them. Keep a few spare o-rings around, clean the gas system, clean out and lube the action, clean and lube the trigger and you should be good for just about anything that comes your way.

I don't know how you are checking it but remember the locking block has to be in the UP position before the firing pin can protrude. That is a safety feature to be sure the bolt is locked before the gun can fire.

Thanks guys, the locking block in the UP position may be the problem. Need to check to make sure it is actually locking up properly.
