Rem. 11-48 Ejection prob.

I've recently inherited 2 Remington 11-48 12 gauges. One of them began hanging up upon ejection a few years ago and has progessively become worse. I have completely disassembled both, cleaned all parts/mechanisms, applied a light lubricant to the tube which the spring covers, yet one of them still cannot fire without the empty cartridge hanging up halfway out the ejection opening. It hangs up 100% regardless of load being fired (even high brass.) Could the spring simply be worn out? If so, is this a part regularly available? If not the spring what are other possibilities? I would appreciate any suggestions/advice.

I'll take a poke at this. I do not own an 11-48 so do not know the little idiosyncracies the guns may have. Of course not seeing the actual gun is not the way to find the problem. Since you have two similar guns and one works and the other malfunctions with the same ammo, the problem is the gun. Probably some part needs to be replaced or worked on.

Could be the extractor or possibly the bolt return spring.

Try working the mechanism with a snap cap in the good gun, then in the bad one to see if anything is different. IE the extractor may be out of spec or bent or worn.

Try replacing the recoil spring to see if that helps.

Take out the bolt in both guns and carefully examine them for differences, remembering of course which is the good bolt

Check all parts for burrs, peening, wear or badly fitting parts.

Was the gun owned by a Trapshooter? Maybe he engineered the gun not to toss the empties?


If all else fails see a competent gunsmith, or even try calling Remington.

I've compared the parts and notice no obvious differences in wear nor anything that appears to be excessively worn. The shotguns haven't been altered by either owner. The functioning shotgun was owned by my grandfather and the non-functioning by my dad. They were primarily used for squirrel, duck, and dove hunting. Anyone know of a Houston area store where I can pick up a recoil spring? I've been guessing this is the culprit part and it doesn't look to be an expensive replacement.
