Reloder 7

The Lyman handbook only lists RX7 up to and including the 50 grain jacketed bullet for the .223 but not beyond except for a cast bullet. RX7 is a popular powder for rifle loads using cast bullets. Lyman seems to like AA2015 for many of its .223 loads.

Alliant Reloader7, RX7, and RL7, all the same thing, as opposed to Accurate 7 (aka AA#7) that is different.

Don't know about using it for. 223 but for heavy subsonic loads in the .300bo it's perfect.

I use RL7 for 7.62x39 ak loads but never tried it in 223. By the looks of the burn rate you can probably use it for very light 40-50 gr bullets but be cautious as theres not a lot of data for RL7

RL-7 is fantastic for pushing cast bullets.
Not so good for jacketed. Your going to want to move down the burn rate chart to a slower powder.
H335 would be an excellent choice. esp since it was what the military used. No need to reinvent the wheel.

I mostly use it for my cast x39 loads. It works decently enough for my 55gr 223 but I never did any accuracy testing other than ping an 8" steel at 340 yards with it.

Did you buy the Reloader #7 or just have it on hand? I've not seen any on the shelves for about 3 years.

There are better powders for 223, I like Reloader #7 for my 221 Fireball.

Reloader 7 is one of those powders that works well in so many different cartridges, that I always have a pound or three on hand. As mentioned by others it really shines with cast bullets, especially in 30 caliber cartridges like the 30-30 and 30-06. It also helps that our gun club almost always has it on the shelf for $17.50 lb. We don't have many cast bullet shooters in the club, so maybe I'm just the only one buying it. Other powders like CFE223 and H335 sell out the same day they come in.

One upside to the powder shortage is that we're forced to try loads that we otherwise would have never tried. Some of those loads don't work very well, and sometimes we stumble across a real winner. One of the most accurate loads that I've stumbled into for the .223 and Hornady 55 grain fmj-bt bullets, uses 20.4 grains of Reloader 7. Between me and my two boys we have three different AR-15's, ones a Daniel Defense and two are home builds. All of the rifles have 16" M4 style barrels with carbine length gas tubes, and they all shoot this load under 1 moa.

Reloader 7

Like everyone says RL7 works very well for cast bullets in about everything. I've used it 223 and 44 mag and lots of other things. It really likes large bore straight wall cases.

I see data listed for it by Sierra Bullets, Nosler list it with a 40 grain bullet. I used some a few years ago with my .221 Fireball CZ bolt action. It worked great with 40 grain bullets. I used it all up, and have used a different powder since then, as I switched to a heavier bullet that was easier to find. I have never tried it in .223 Rem.

I am now using IMR 4066, and Hodgdon H335 for 55 grain bullets. For heavier than that I use Varget, or Reloader 15. With a slight edge going to RL15.

It will work. I am not sure how great it will work. If you are making rounds to go bang out of your AR, and blast some cans, and put holes in paper then it should do that just fine.
