Reloads for .223 Savage 12 "LRPV"

I purchased a Savage .223 Model 12 LRPV. It is accurate, but I feel like I could get better accuracy out of it.At 100 yds I am getting Nickel sized holes on average and the smallest dime sized groups for 3 shots. A friend has Rem 700 and he gets one enlarged hole at 100 yds. But mine still has paper in between the holes.

If anyone on here reloads for their Savage .223 Model 12 LRPV it would be nice to know what weight bullets you use to get one hole at 100yds with 5 shots.

I called savage and they said that the 1 in 9 twist barrel on that gun will shoot 52gr - 77gr, but they could not give me a weight that would work best. I have so far just been using "trial and error" and testing my reloads to see what gives me the tightest group. My best so far has been with 69 gr Match King bullet, 24.3 gr of Reloader 15 powder. Winchester brass and primers set to overall 2.333
With the 69gr bullet, the hole is oval/slanted that it leaves in the paper. It is like the bullet is not stabilizing in flight, but I think if it was truly not stabilizing, then I wouldn't get dime to nickle sized groups.

I have seen several suggestions for .223's in general but does anyone have a suggestion for this savage model. Any Help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Ryan

My 12 likes 68gr BTHP,69gr BTHP,75gr BTHP & Moly,75gr AMax & Moly,77gr BTHP.
As far as powders,I use H355,Varget,BL-C(2),IMR 4895,and Reloader 15.
If I do my part, the gun shoots .25-.40 groups on a regular basis.

Boy do i have a load for you.

60 gn Hornady V-Max
Rem 7 1/2 Bench Rest Primers
24 gns RL-15
Col 2.29

Dime size pattern at 300 yards. One hole at 100 very easy.
If you try this let me know how it worked for you,but i think i have the answer already. Deadly accurate.

Savage told me, DO NOT shoot Moly bullets in that barrel. I was at first but since they told me no to, I am going back to cooper. After barrel break in, I shot 20-25 Moly bullets through there.

Ace,I shoot more Moly coated bullets through all my rifles than Copper plated bullets.
I have 4 Savage rifles that I shoot every week,100-200 rds a month through each sometimes more.I have never heard of a mfg saying not to shoot Moly coated bullets, with the exception of breaking in a barrel.

The whole point of the Moly coating is it has less friction than the Copper plating.

4runnerman,That is a great load.I shoot an almost identical load out of my AR's and my Model 12.

I had problems few years back with Moly the barrel pitted I certainly do no know why I used the same cleaning methods however I replaced barrel and never used moly again, frankly I never achieved any improved with it, however many shooters love the stuff.

I have a Savage model 12 BTVS 1:9 twist 223 it prefers 52gr match bullets the heavier bullets tend to open up groups Ive used H322,H335, Varget, and BLC2 may try H4895 next.

Txhillbilly-- That's what i have is Model 12 FVSS. Awesome rifle. I was so amazed at the accuracy of that thing. If you shoot long distance 500 or more yards try this one

75 A-Max
Rem 7 1/2 Bench Rest Primers
24 gns RL-15
2.475 COL

Unbeleivably accurate in my Model 12. Single load only of course.

Savage 12LRPV .223

Hello!
I am interested to buy Savage Arms 12 Series Varmint 12LRPV Rifle, 18461, SS, Bolt, Rd 4, 26 ", AccuTrigger.
I did not get any information whether the twist is 1:7 or 1:9.
I will use it for target shooting at greater distances.
I am interested in your experience and opinion, or the rifle-quality, useful, how it works at larger distances from 300 to 500-600m +, and the type and weight of the balls used for max. distance.
Thank you for your answers and opinions.
Greetings from
A.

Consider the Hornady A-Max 75 grain BT bullet. About a year ago someone here turned me on to these A-Max bullets, describing them as “jaw dropping accuracy”. This person was correct. I use A-Max in both my .223 and 7mm with very good results.
