1) Buy a manual. Suggest the Lyman book for versatility.
The Varget start load for a 53 grain bullet(who made it or its shape doesn't matter) according to Hodgdon's site is 24.0. Max is 27.0C. The 'C' means compressed. Compressed loads are nothing to worry about.

Varget is an excellent versatile powder but i'm thinking it might be a bit too slow for your 53 gr bullets. I like H335 , 8208XBR or 4895 for the lighter bullets . Are you loading for a bolt gun or a semi auto ?

Sounds to slow to me also. That's why it's compressed. When I was shooting a 223, seem's like my powder was H335.
