Reloader 17 for .270 130 gr bullets

I was wondering if anyone has tried or has good data for RL-17 with 130 grain bullets in .270 winchester.

I'm looking for a good, fast and accurate hunting load. Data is still a little scarce for RL-17 since it's a newer powder.

I'm looking for top-end velocity since I may have a little over 400 yard shot opportunity where I'm hunting whitetail this fall.

I have several other suitable powders on hand but I've heard good things about the velocity potential with this powder. I know nothing about how accurate it may/may not be in my rifle and that will be the deciding factor.

Thanks in advance.

I use R17 in my 260 behind 120 gr Nosler BT's, but have used only H4831sc or H4831 in my 270 behind the 130 grain Noslers.

So all I can do is to say that R17 gives excellent accuracy in the 260. The only problem with that powder is that load data is still a bit tougher to find than almost any other powder that I have or use. I'll probably switch to H4350 eventually.

I've also got a load for RL17 in .260 - with a 129gr bullet. When my buddy was researching the load in Quickload, he noticed that RL17 seemed to perform best (according to QL's extrapolated data) when used with bullets that are on the medium to heavy end of the spectrum for that caliber.

Doyle, I would figure .270 would be an exception to the trend you saw of RL-17 liking medium to heavy for caliber bullets since it's on the fast-burning side of acceptable .270 powders. I could be wrong though. Any chance I could get you to plug it into QuickLoad for me?

Should work great and with less muzzle blast than some. Rl19 and rl 22 have worked great with 130s in my .270, though rl22 seemed a bit more optimal with 140 and 150 gr. still, for me rl22 and h4831 are THE powders for making a .270 tick.

My .270 is a IMR 4831 kind of girl...shoots so good I haven't tried anything else. I did try RL-17 in several calibers I found it was too temp sensitive for me and would change my POI when weather changes.

There's 130 grain data on Alliant's site. Max load of 54 grains gives 3,136 fps with an SP. Plus a couple unverified loads on Reloader's Nest.

Any chance I could get you to plug it into QuickLoad for me?

Sorry Steve. I no longer have access to Quickload since I moved to MS. One of these days I'll buy a copy for myself.

Reloder 17 is what I use in my .270 Win Marlin X7, and it performs very well. My load is 53.0 gr with a Rem 9 1/2 primer and a Nosler 130 gr Ballistic Tip or Solid Base bullet in PPU brass. Chronographs around 2930 fps out of the 22 inch barrel and averages MOA or better for 3 shot groups at 100 yards from the bench. I stopped at 53.0 gr because I got the accuracy I wanted at sufficient velocity for hunting since I don‘t plan on shooting past 300 yards and won't be hunting anything bigger than mule deer with that rifle.

Thanks for the info 2ndtimer. That's good velocity for a mid range load out of a 22" barrel. I bought a Hornady 9th edition manual that has RL-17 data and it shows about 2800 fps with your load from a 24" barrel.

Hornady's velocity numbers seem very conservative across all cartridges compared to other manuals. It shows a max load of 56.1 grains at only 3000 fps but I hope to get faster than that in my load work up. I'd like to find an accurate load at around 3150-3200 fps from my 24" tube but I don't know that it will be with this powder.

I'd like to try RL-22 but can't find any locally right now.

I do have a pound each of Hybrid 100v, Ramshot Hunter, and W760 to play with as well.

I may also try RL-17 out in my 6mm remingtons and my .243 win.

Just fired some today at my range, load is 54.0 grains with the Nosler 130 grain ballistic tip sparked by a Federal 210. I'm getting an average of 3104 fps with a standard deviation of 9 fps accuracy is well under 1 moa. Rife is an older Ruger M_77 with a new 25" Benchmark 5r stainless barrel.

41,
Sounds like you've found your load!

Steve,
All your listed powders should work decently.
You may also want to try Alliant's Power Pro 4000.

As for your 6mm Rem, and especially the 243 Win, i'd advise trying some RL26. Especially with 100+ gr bullets.
