Relieving Mag Floorplates on Short Guns

Has anyone shortened the lip on their mag floorplates? Does it have an effect on the mag?

I have a Kimber Ultra Carry that I use Wilson Mags in. The bottom of the mag (plastic) sticks out in front of the grip frame. I was thinking about taking a Dremel to it to make it flush with the grip frame.

I also am having the same problem with my Colt Mustang mags, but the floorplates on those are steel.

Any ideas?

First of all, does the protusion hurt you? If not, leave it. If you ever need to get that mag out in a hurry due to a malf, that tab provides a place to whip it out. Grabbing the base pad would be harder as it will require two fingers and a pinch.

Yep. That's also what that half-moon cutout is for on the full size Glocks.

Even with a fresh mag in your support hand, you can get the tip of your ring finger on that tab and strip it right out.

A better option for those Wilson mags would be to get low-profile baseplates. The forward lip shouldn't be bothering you. If anything it keeps your fingers where they belong.

The Mustang steel base digs right into my right ring finger. The Wilson plastic base on the Kimber has just enough gap to pinch me right in the same area.

As far as the base keeping my fingers where they are supposed to be, well, where are they supposed to be? I have no problem with full size grip frame guns, the base goes under my pinky. It's the short guns that fit in the palm of my hand that dig into me. My pinky sits completely under the base of the gun. The pressure of my ring finger keeps the gun tight in my palm.
