Reliability survey to help with purchase

OK, want to get something for my gf. I want it simple and reliable, let me rephrase that, SUPER RELIABLE.

So if you kind folks will give me a:

Gun: #Number of Rounds : #Number of failures

That would be great! So something like:

Glock 23: 7000 rnds : 0 failures
HK USP 45: 10,000 rnds : 0 failures

Thanks!
Albert

Taurus .357, 4" barrel: froze on the third round fired, could not get the cylinder opened, took it back to dealer and paid the extra for:

Smith & Wesson Model 19, roughly 3300 rounds, cleaned every 100 or so, no malfunctions.

Ruger Blackhawk .357, est. 1600 rounds, no failures to fire, one bulged casing required work to extract from cylinder.

difference, invert the number's for the P226
and the P229!!! :)

specialist and Airborne, ya gotta remember, this is over a 13 year period and I don't still HAVE all those guns. <g>
I have gone through phases in my shooting life...started out with Glocks, went to various double actions from there (SIG then HK) and now have settled into 1911s for what seems like an extended stay.

Rik,

Have you shot a SigPro? I was hoping you had one, so you can give me a comparison of a SigPro vs. the Glocks and HK's, and P series Sigs..

Thanks all of you.

twoblink, sorry, no, never got around to owning a Sigpro. FWIW, all the SIGs I owned were excellent guns, more accurate than anything but my 1911s. The only downside was their finish seemed to wear faster than my other guns.

SIG 220 500 rounds 0 jams
SIG 229 500 rounds 0 jams
HK Compact 45 300 rounds 0 jams
Glock 27 600 rounds 0 jams 1 broken guide rod
Kimber Polymer 150 rounds, more jams than I can count, sent back to Kimber, got it back in same condition, got rid of.

1) EAA Witness full-size 9x19 = 20,000 rds / 0 failure

2) EAA Witness full-size 45ACP = POS (but 100% reliable wearing a 38 Super longslide top end / 3,000 rds/ 0 failure)

3) completely custom 1911 = requires lubrication after 1,000 rounds to remain 100% reliable

4) Glock M20 = POS

5) Ruger wheels (6) = P'sOS

6) Taurus PT22 = 100% after break-in

7) NAA 22 = 100%

8) EAA Witness full-size 9x19 (carry gun) = pretty good (LOL)

9) wifes' M38 = 500 rds / 0 failure

Machines are not 100% reliable.

Glock 17~3000-1 Failure
Sig 239~1000-No Failures

wow CX2, you've had a Glock jam on you that many times??? Were you feeding it hot loads, lead, what??? I've never heard of a glock jamming that much...

We'll, I'm still waiting to see if anybody has put a few thousand rounds through a SigPro so they can tell me how it's been in the reliability dept.

It seems from this informal survey, HK's, Glocks, and Sig's, as well as Rugers are pretty trouble free, and the Kimbers are quite another story..

Haven't quite finished drooling over Rik's cache there...

twoblink,

Check out the archives at glocktalk.com and you'll find that Glocks do jam. Some blame the mags, other ammo, yet others the operator. Who can tell.

If your looking for a defense tool for your girl friend consider a good 38spcl revolver. There are the Lady Smiths that come with very good trigger pulls and are nicely finished. A good Centennial will also give you reliable performance. If it's a pistol you want then shed's be well served with a SIG Sauer P239. Polymer frame pistols are more suceptible to problems due to improper grip.

------------------
So many pistols, so little money.

I've read about something called "grip bulge" where the polymer grips expand during firing. I've never experienced that before when i shot glocks, or it might have been too slight for me to notice.

I really was thinking of getting my gf a glock because there is basically nothing else to fuss with, no hammers, no switches etc..

Is there any other gun that is as "low fuss" as the glocks, with the same amount of reliability?

twoblink

Twoblink - HK USPs are probably more reliable than Glocks (not slamming Glocks, just my experience), just as tough, and typically more accurate. Glock's tennifer finish is tops.

If you're thinking small think Kahr or Glock.
