Reliability of Styer M40?

I am going to be purchasing a new handgun in the near future. I have been eyeing the new Steyer M-series pistols, specifically the M40. I like the feel but am worried about reports on its reliability. I have seen several people here claim to have had it misfire on them. Recently I went to a local range and tried one out. It misfired 3 times in the first 30 rounds! Each misfire had a small strike mark on the edge of the primer. Each round worked fine when used again.
My question is, how pervasive are these reliability problems? Does anyone know what is causing them? Has Steyr fixed them?
Several of you have the Steyr M40. Is this a gun I can trust my life with or should I go with something proven like a Glock?

Why wouldnt you go with something proven (like the glock) in the first place?

Why dont you get rid of that nickel plated sissy pistol and get yourself a glock. :::Tommy Lee Jones:::

I have some M40 questions of my own:

1) Are night sights available?

2) What's the going rate for spare magazines?

3) Is there some trick to manipulating the manual safety? I tried it at a local gun shop and found the safety very difficult to engage or disengage smoothly with one hand.

4) Will GSI convert a private citizen's "storage lock" to use a handcuff key like the police models do?

Having done some research on these I can answer most of your questions.

1) GSI is telling me that Steyr will be offerint Trilux tritium sights. These should ship in June.
2) Spare magazines are $39 through GSI (www.gsifirearms.com)
3) I have tried the saftey on 2 M40s. The first was at a gun store and the safety was very hard to engage. The second was at a range and was very easy to engage. It may need to be worn in some before it engages easily.
4) I can't answer this one.

Thanks for the info, Maddog.

Thirty-nine bucks seems too expensive for a plain ol' ten round magazine. That stinks. :(

The May 2000 issue of Guns & Ammo has a short review of the Steyr M40. While the pistol performed flawlessly with American Eagle and Black Hill ammunition, there were two failures to eject and four failures to fire because the Norma ammunition would not chamber completely. According to Black Hills, who loads for Norma, Norma brass is a bit thicker.

CDNN has Steyr magazines for $30 - http://www.cdnninvestments.com/steyr2.html
