Reinforced Mouth Holsters

First of all, I think the advent of the reinforced mouth on holsters is one of those "how did we do without it" features. But, here is my question. How many people limit themselves to only those holsters with this particular feature? I understand it aids in one-handed reholstering. I always have it with my IWB rigs, but what about pancake holsters? Pistols you carry infrequently?

In looking at catalogs and the websites of makers it seems they often offer a select few with this feature.

I'm looking at a pair Don Hume holsters for a pistol I carry but not too terribly often. One version has the reinforced mouth, the other doesn't. I'm just not sure if it's that big of a deal for a pistol that won't see a lot of holster time.

I prefer holsters with reinforced mouths and most of my holsters have that feature. But one of my favorite holsters is the Alessi PCH IWB holster which does not have any separate reinforcement. Don't know what Lou does in that design but the holster works well without reinforcement.

Good shooting and be safe.

For a IWB I like some type of support/reinforcement for reholstering. For pancake types I don't think it is needed as much.

For OWB styles, is the idea that over time the leather will soften and collapse without a gun in it? I've looked over several holsters with stiff leather in shops and it seems reholstering would be fine without a metal band. Now if it was suede or soft leather, that would be a different story......

if you plan to practice a draw, get one with reinforced mouth, especially an IWB.

Agreed. I never understand how people carry and don't practice a draw...

There are other good reasons to have a holster with a reinforced mouth, but practice is the prime reason for me.
