Reid Tells "Moms Demand Action" No Gun Control in Senate for 2013

Louca has a very good point. They are gearing up for a tough election. They have really miffed a lot of right leaning voters this year, and they know we are now motivated to get out to polls to block this thing. Same reason for the back step on Obamacare. They are probably hoping if they back off we will forget about it and be lazy getting out to the polls. We should all try to keep reminders on the forums for election day. We have to keep the House or risk being disarmed.:(

We are a state that loves guns!! If Reid was all for more gun control he wouldn't have a chance of reelection. On a side note, has it occurred to anyone that the presidents talk of more gun control on the national level was just strategic? Obama is intelligent, he knew gc measures had no hope of passing in the house, however the panic buying that ensued cleared the shelves in gun stores nation wide, gave a huge boost to retail sales, sales tax revenues, and manufacturing; all resulting in a strengthened economy. Obama can appeal to the more liberal democrats saying he tried for more gc, and appeal to everyone else with the better economy. Brilliantly concieved, excellently executed plan. Nothing in d.c. is without long term strategy

I'd agree with Sierra if

There weren't 5-6 states that took really hard hits from the GC movement. It's a shallow and short term "fix" that hurts consumer rights

As big as gun sales were the last 6 months, very little in the scheme of things. I bet a single popular brand of drywall dwarfs all firearm sales.

There was talk that he was guaranteed to lose his seat in 2010. That didn't happen. Reid is old guard, and he knows how to protect his turf.

That said, he's not been all that bad on 2A issues. He was under a great deal of pressure to get S. 649 to the floor, but I don't recall him being all that big a fan of the bill itself.

Reid made some canny moves during the S.649 debate. For example, he voted against background checks which although seemingly pro-gun at first, meant that the issue could be kept alive and brought up with little notice later. Likewise he voted for the assault weapons ban, which seems anti-gun but had the effect of driving a stake through that amendment for the remainder of the session.

He also tried to rush gun control through without regular order, which again at first glance seems anti-Second Amendment; but because of this irregular order and the threat of filibuster, the vote threshold was set at 60 instead of 50. Had it been 50, several bad laws would have passed.

Whatever else you can say, Reid seems real talented at making sure both sides in the debate owe him for various small victories.

Sen Reid & the NRA....

Wasn't Sen Harry Reid(D-NV) given a "thumb's up" by the NRA?
I do not know his exact "letter grade" from the ILA but they seemed rather chummy in the printed magazine.

I saw on last weekend's McCloughlin Group that the current US Congress is on track to be one of the least productive sessions ever .

The gun control push is slowly starting to lose steam & many cities/states will back away from the 2A/gun issues because they know most gun owners can also vote. :D

"Wasn't Sen Harry Reid(D-NV) given a "thumb's up" by the NRA?"

Yes.

So?

Wouldn't be the first time that someone with a good NRA rating went against them.

NRA RATES them based on their previous actions regarding firearms.

It doesn't own them nor, contrary to popular perception, control them like puppets.

Joe Manchin is a pretty good example of that.

Sometimes I really think that people have a very curiously skewed view of what NRA's ratings are...

Then again, the NRA ratings have been very curiously skewed at times, too.
