Registration Requirements?

I have rifles, shotguns and pistols I have purchased legally while residing in New Jersey. I grew up in Oklahoma where I enjoyed shooting while growing up. My mother purchased rifles, shotguns, and pistols which I used. My mother has recently passed, and I am trying to determine if I can just drive them into New Jersey as the legal heir and if I need to register them in any fashion since I have a firearms ID card.

Any advice?

Jeff

Do you intend to transport them to OK??

If so, longguns would be no problem. Handguns would be problem-big one.

What are you talking about?

He is asking if he can bring some inherited firearms back to NJ from OK.

Federal law says that inheritting firearms is one of the exceptions to the requirement that interstate transfers go through a dealer.

However, he really needs to know about NJ law.

I know that NJ law provides an exception to the gun purchasing rules when it comes to inheritance. I don't know exactly what needs to be done, but as far as I know, as long as the guns are legal to possess in NJ, it's a relatively painless process (ironic for NJ).

The long guns do not need to be registered. Pistols do not need to be registered if legally brought into the state--meaning somebody moved to NJ and brought pistols they purchased as a resident of another state with them. I don't know if pistols can be done that way interstate with an inheritance, though. Best bet is to check with an attorney, preferably one who specializes in firearms law.
