Regarding Federal HST

So, on this forum, Federal HST is considered supremely good ammo, and I saw some ballistic tests of the stuff (awesome!) which leads me to believe my Federal Hydra-Shok 155gr .40s are behind the times. However, though a significant amount of board members say they carry HST, whenever I find it, as I did recently, there is a disclaimer that sales are to LE agencies or LEOs ONLY. Is there a loophole I'm missing?

I tried searching for a thread that has covered this, but the round has been discussed a lot, so my apologies if this is a rehash.

It's legal for citizens in most states to own it, and can be boughten when available most places. In some states that restrict certain types of ammo, like HP ammo, it may not be legal to own / buy.

As you see in the above link, they won't sell it now to anyone that's not an LEO, but they have in the past. Some say it's the Mfgr now putting the restriction on it.

Functionally, isn't really the same as Hornandy's Critical Defense ammo ?

But then , read this one ... on Talon's ....

Winchester won't sell it to anyone "directly" who is not an LEO or agency, BUT .....

Legally, there is no differences in it from other HP ammo. So in NJ, you can't have it.

As for the disclaimer, consider it a marketing gimmick. It makes people feel good they they can buy ammo allegedly claimed to only be for LEOs...because we all know that the cops have super ammo, stuff that we can't get, right?

HST is good stuff, but the disclaimer is bunk. You will see it on ammo, ballistic vests, and various other items where there isn't typically such a law.

Thanks guys! Realistically, I know shot placement is all that matters, but I still want the best I can get. I' m in Wyoming, so I don't foresee problems with local law.

Make sure you try it in your guns before you buy a bunch. I've tried it in all my .45s, and it's nowhere near as accurate or consistent in my guns. I use Hydra-Shok, before HST and now. YMMV.

I have both HST and Hyrdo-Shok.... I'ld take either one without any qualms.

I think the OP is referring to though, that they are showing they will NOT now sell HST to non-LEO people.

I heard awhile back that could be coming , and it's Federal doing it, not anyone else. It's quite legal to own here and most places, but.... as I understood it they were getting "pressure" from somewhere. It's all BS.

I think a guy would have to pull down some loads and do an in depth analysis to tell exactly what the functional difference is between HST and their Critical Defense stuff. We are issued the .40 180 grain HST, which is clearly marked LE only. I tend to think of this as Hornaday marking the stuff sold to various agencies in bulk, and at a certain rate, so as to keep it separate from ammo priced to be sold in retail outlets. I may be just a tad bit cynical (so I am told), but that's what I think.
