Refinishing rosewood grips

Can anyone give me some info on the best ways to stain or urethane a set of rosewood grips. I really just want to bring them to a luster without changing the color. I tried a paint on urethane, then the spray and it looked like crap. I have sanded them down now and need to find out what I can do to bring it back to a nice luster. Have I already ruined them for good? I am new to this process. I have stained doors, but never had this much trouble. The grips just don't come out smooth. Got some Ideas???

Sand them with 320, then 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper used dry. Then buff with 0000 steel wool. Wax with a good paste wax.
Rosewood does not need stain.

I agree with Bill DeShivs advice with the exception of the steel wool. Steel wool can leave small slivers behind that will eventually lead to rust spots in the wood grain. Either use bronze wool or finish sand with 600 grit. It will be so sexy smooth you may feel guilty about handling the grips. You can put a light coat of TruOil on it, but rosewood really doesn't need it.

I guess I phrased that wrong. My goal was to just gloss them up a bit, not actually change the color. I will try the sanding and waxing idea. I sure do appreciate the ideas.

After the sanding you could also give them a coat or two of Minwax Antique Oil. It buffs up to a low luster. Several 'threads' have suggeted it as a finish for gun stocks and I've used it with good results.

I used to build custom furniture and I can tell you one thing. If you want a nice and easy finish just use "Krylon Acrylic Crystal Clear" stray. Build up a few thin layers then buff down with "0000" steel wool.

Your right, rosewood doesn't need any stain. I made a knife handle with some and sanded it with 280 grit then to the buffing wheel using a polishing compound made for wood and plastic, shines like glass withe deep luster, I didn't put any finish on it and it still looks good a year latter.
