Refinishing BHP grips?

I might have a chance to pick up some factory wood grips for the Browning HiPower for a great price but they are black and I'd prefer the lighter traditional walnut color. I was wondering if anyone knows what would be involved in stripping the finish off of them? It seems like it should be pretty straight forward, but that's how most things seem when you haven't done them before. :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

Because the grips are small you should be able to immerse them in a liquid paint stripper. This is hard on the patina of the wood, but in used grips the tendency of the liquid to get old gun oil out is useful. When you start soaking the grips, also start soaking a pad of 000 steel wool in some denatured alcohol to remove the oil that keeps the stuff from rusting. Gently wipe away any paint residue on the checkered side. You can rub harder on the gun frame side. Let evaporation remove most of the liquid from the surface, but before it is 100% dry, use a retired toothbrush dipped in denatured alcohol to scrub the checkering clean.

Refinish with Danish oil, Watco or Deft. It will do a better job on restoring the appearance than a fast drying clear finish will.
