Refinishing a nickel plated gun???

I just acquired a nickel-plated handgun that I'd like to refinish. I just don't like nickel finishes. Question is...can it be done? What I'd like to do is refinish it in a black matte or moly/teflon-type finish. Please help!

Yes, it can be done. Brownells sell a nickel stripping solution, though I know little about it, and it may require rigging up some sort of equipment. Check their website. If I were you, I would send the gun to the folks at Techplate Engineering. They will strip the nickel, and if you wish to continue with them, they'll teflon coat it, moly coat it, anything...their website is

I can't vouch for their quality, I just know they have the capability...

Good luck

FWIW, I have had some revolvers stripped and reblued, and things worked out OK.

Note though, that nickel plating adds to the surface of the metal so factories have to make some adjustment in parts fitting when a gun is to be nickeled. The result is that if the nickel is removed, the parts can be looser than normal unless the new finish takes up the slack (which bluing does not do).
