Refinished Marlin 15YN

A few weeks back I picked up an older Marlin 15YN .22lr for my oldest Son. The wood was ok, but nothing great, bluing a bit worn but the rifle is serviceable. Last week I got the bug to refinish the stock, so lots of sanding to smooth it out and about 15 coats of tru oil later and this is what I got (sorry never dawned on me to take before pictures for some reason).

The pictures don't really do it justice, but who'd have thought that underneath that awful finish there'd be a piece of wood this nice. I'm very happy with the way it turned out and am now considering refinishing the metal although I'm not sure a cold blue will look right.

Looks mighty fine just the way it is... I wouldn't try to reblue, the rifle has character just like that.

I've thought of refinishing my Marlin 15's stock, I think it would look better wtih an oil finish... and your results may have just pushed me over the edge!

I think the 15YN is the best single shot kids rifle out there . This observation is mostly from a safety and durability standpoint . They are accurate and the trigger is easy to lighten up . I have trained my son and grandson on tne same rifle and it's still got alot of kids left in it !

I never would have guessed when I bought the rifle that the wood was that nice, I have no idea why Marlin decided to cover it up. Maybe they didn't want the added expense of an oil finish? I think Charlie might be right I do kind of like the patina of the metal so I may leave it alone. So far I'm very happy with the rifle itself, my son hasn't shot it yet, we're still working on gun safety and fundamentals using the BB rifle. It shot pretty well for me when I tested it out if it actually fit me I'm sure it would have shot much better for me. Must have been a pretty good show for anyone watching a 6'3" man trying to shoot that little rifle.
