Refinish tips for grips

Is it just me, or are the grips on my Star dried-out and shabby-looking?

If there's nothing wrong or nothing I can do, I'll live with it.

Otherwise, I'd appreciate any tips for a quick, easy fix.

I realize that is likely two different tips, three if you'll also suggest a "best" solution.

Thanks,

Will

Some checkering is actually unfinished, or has one coat brushed in. However, to bring that out, I suggest you buy a can of spray-on oil finish, so it will penetrate. You could use polyurethane, but you would need it thin, and I have seen some bubble up after drying on checkering due to poor adherence.

For polyurethane, I use the new Rust-Oleum polyurethane for furniture. It's what I've been using some with good success.

Poly spray:

.

Those grip panels look perfect to me; but I suppose you could remove them from the pistol & apply some TruOil to them with an old toothbrush.

Thanks, all.

I think I'll leave it like it is for the time being.

I'm going to take some pictures, however, and ask some questions up on the Semi-auto thread.

How to tell the difference between Chrome and Electroless Nickel and is the latter the same as Starvel?

I'm a Star fan, for sure. I now have a BM model, a BKM, a PD, and a DK.

I used to carry the BKM, back when it was a "small" 9mm :D.

Best,

Will

I can answer here.
"Starvel" is electroless nickel applied over a blasted surface.
Chrome is whiter than nickel. Nickel has a yellowish-gray tint. Either electroless nickel, electrolytic nickel, decorative chrome, or industrial hard chrome can be plated over a matte/blasted surface or a shiny surface.
