Refinish Scope ?

Any suggestions on how to touch up finish on a scope. I have a J.Unertl 10x scope that has a significant scuff mark on it. Almost looks like finish was rubbed off part of it. Other than that it appears in good condition, optics are fine, rings in good condition. Should I even bother to refinish? Any info would be appriciated.

We've had several customers over the years who wanted us to apply our TG-1 finish to scopes. I'm not sure if it can be done with any real durabilty but it can not be done by our process. The application and curing heat would destroy the optics.
However, I did come up with a way to make beat up old scopes look good and even add some "armor" at the same time. I used electrical shrink tubing. You can get it in a variety of colors and sizes. Use the size that just barely fits over the tube. Cut it oversize so it butts up against the turrets and hangs over the ends. Shrink it in place with a lighter. A lighter does put some soot on it. I used a propane torch but keep it moving really fast and hold the tube in your hand. When it get's uncomfortably warm, stop and let it cool down. When it's all shrunk in place, trim the ends and around the turrets with a razor blade. Set it in the rings and mark it with a pencil. I used a piece of masking tabe wrapped around it to make a nice straight line. Trim it from the ring areas and voila! It looks good..sort of a charcoal color. (I used black tubing) It adds some rubber armor too. I've done quite a few of my own scopes that way and it holds up well. The only issue is that you'll have to use larger caps to fit the ends. Hope this helps. Keep yer powder dry, Mac.
