Refinish CMP rifle?

I've got a USGI CMP rifle that is just a great rifle. Its a post-WWII H&R manufacture and has a mixed bag of Springfield and H&R parts. The wood may be original but has been dinged up and filled with wood putty at points. SN: 5696XXX

This rifle shoots really well and I am considering having it refinished and put in a new wood stock in order to better preserve it.

If I do this am I ruining the value of a collectible or historical rifle? Or is this rifle old enough and arsenal-refinished enough that it has no significant collector's value?

You did not mention if the barrel is original or not. If it has been rebarreled I would go ahead and refinish it. It seems that with all the parts being a "mixed bag" as you say I have doubts that it has much collector value. If the barrel is original and it shoots good and the muzzle is tight you could always then try to find H&R parts to get all the parts the same, but it still would not be "an original". If it were mine I would refinish it, bed it in new wood, and "go burn some ought sixes with it"! :)

New Stock!

I have an extra wood stock that I purchased a while back. It is a Boyd's drop-in w/handguard - walnut. I have one on a M1 I purchased less wood. I also put one on an M1 for my brother. If you are interested, please leave me an e-mail address and we cn communicate. :D
