I finally got around to picking up an air rifle and it is a lot of fun so far. I have been thinking about this for a couple of years but was never a priority. Yesterday I was wandering through Dick's Sporting Goods and saw Remington Vantage 1200 (rebranded Crossman) that looked simple yet reasonably well made for the price of $120.
Took it home, read the manual, familiarized myself and then tried it out in the garage with a little bullet trap. Wow! It is pretty darn accurate. I was only able to shoot at 15 ft but it was making cloverleaf holes. Also it is too powerful for the little bullet trap and was beating it up. This ought to be pretty good at hitting tin cans at 25 yds or as possum or racoon medicine.
This Remington really balances well. I was very impressed for the low price that it was well balanced and the firesights are great. All in all this is a winner for plinking fun and sight/trigger practice. It comes with a 4x scope but the sights are so good that I see no need for it within 25 yds.
It was so much fun shooting in the garage I thought I would get another one more suited for that and smaller for my grandkids. I picked up a Crossman 760 pump, just like my buddy had when we hunted starlings and squirrels as kids. For about $40 it is pretty good. Mostly plastic but it work fine with BBs or pellet. It also has the firesights front post and while not as accurate it is still decent within the short range of 15 ft.
Anyway, air guns are a lot of shooting fun for hardly any money and convenient for suburban backyard or garage shooting.
