Reddot on Ruger Mark II

Would you provide some suggestions on red dot sights & mounting on my Mark II, 5 1/2" bull barrel, stainless? What bases, rings, & recommended reddot. I'll use it strictly for recreation--nothing competitive. My post-40 eyes are making the open sights tougher & tougher.... Thanks.

What Ledbetter would do

Get a nice pre-drilled Jack Weigand mounting rail and a cheap BSA red dot ($39.95 at midwayusa.com) until you know what scope or sight you want for sure.

Regards.

I have a Ruger 22/45 and use a solow mount with a Tasco sight. The solow's also work on the Mark II's. The whole setup cost less than $100. Try a search on solow and you should turn up a thread with pictures, or visit their Web site. They are easy to install, but attach with glue. If you wish to remove them, the glue comes off with nail polish remover or a similar chemical.

I've got a Tasco red-dot on my Ruger Mk II Competition. Since the Competition comes predrilled for a scope mount, all I had to do was get a Weaver mount that fit those holes.

You might try browsing the following forum. There's lot's of threads on red-dot sights and mounts.

Hope this helps!

I installed an Optima 2000 on mine, been really happy with it. But I think I am going to swich to a scope, I would like more precision.

Here's my 678GC fitted with a Millet SP1. The competition came with a scope mount with 1" dia. scope rings. The distance between the two scope rings is fixed at approx. 1 6/8". The hard part was getting a 1" scope with "adjustment body" shorter than 1 6/8" that would fit this set up as I do not want to invest in a new set of aftermarket scope mount. Millet SP1 fits perfectly.

Had a Ruger scope mount put on my Mk II for bullseye competition (same mount that comes on some of the upscale target versions. Needed to grind down one of the rings a bit to mount the Propoint 2 but it's been on there for several years and works great.

I've got a competition model and it came with a base and rings. I'm using a 1" Ultradot and it's great. Ultradot's are a little pricey but can be had for $105 through Lippman Enterprises. I've also got one on my 10/22, talk about making things dance at 25-50 yds!

I've got a 6&7/8" barreled MkII with a PDP3 dot scope and a 4" 22/45 with an Optima 2000, both with trigger jobs, and the accuracy is identical with each gun at 25 yds.

I'd like to thank you all for your responses. I'm still doing my looking around--appreciate getting pointed in some good directions.

I have a 22/45 w/a b-square mount and BSA 40mm red dot I'm very happy with. I used it to qualify for my c.c. and got some strange looks, but it's sooo easy to point and shoot.

I have a Ruger Mark II, 5.5" bull. I purchased a VERY nice Ultradot 30mm 4dot scope. It doesn't come predrilled fro a scope mount and I didn't particularaly wan't any new holes in the receiver.

I did some research and ended up with a MGW no-drill mount per a variety of people's recommendations. It works, HOWEVER, it's 1) heavy (an additional 2-3 oz), and 2) topheavy (screwing up the balance of a nice pistol/scope).

So, I got rid of the mount, and went with a solow. It's -nice-

It's lower to the bore than anything else, even (I believe) drilled and tapped with rings. That translates to less adjustments of the scope needed at different ranges (a big prob with the MGW).

It's also VERY light, hasn't moved a bit, and has generally been pretty darn slick. It only comes in 30mm, however, and that may be its only drawback (check out www.solow.com), if you want a 1" scope. Only word of wisdom, if you do go with it, you may need to lightly file a BIT off the bottoms of the rings as they try to bind with the frame, making field stripping tougher. This is remarkably easy to fix. :)

Good luck, and oh, did I mention I love my ultradot? :-)

I have the same model as Ghibli. I mounted a millet red dot with the 1" rings and mounts that came with the gun. (No compensator on mine however)

The combo of gun and scope is far more accurate than my abilities.

Tasco makes a mount for the Optima that goes on in place of the rear sight of the ruger MkII. If you can't find one try EGW gun works:

http://www.egw-guns.com/parts_scopemounts1.htm

They can make mounts for any gun.

It looks like you have a compensator, does it help much and what brand?

Yes, it is a Volquartsen V-Comp. I put it on immediately after I got the gun and never have the chance to compare the performance with and without the compensator. I have not visited the range for over two months now and my index fingure is getting itchy. Will let you know once I have a chance to fire it without the compensator.
