Red Dot Sights Review

Hey all,

I just bought my son a S&W m&p 15-22 and he loves it. It is actually a great little shooter and now he has been asking about scopes. It only comes with the iron sights and a friend said to get a red dot style. I've looked around, but there are a ton to choose from. Does anyone have some suggestions/ideas? I want to keep it in a fairly reasonable budget and nothing fancy. After all, this is just a plinker, but I don't want some dollar store product. Thanks.

I can tell you not to get a Truglo. I was trying to save buck since I don't shoot the gun much but that thing was aweful. Sent it back immediately.
 
Thanks Salty. I was actually just reading about a Truglo on this same forum. There were some mixed reviews, some good/some bad. I guess everyone has their experiences. After reading my post, I guess I should clarify holo style or tube style. I am not sure which one I would like or how my son would like them. Just trying to get a feel for what is out there and people opinions. I have always tried to use the majority rules when it come to items I have never own and then I make up my own mind after get them. Thanks.

I've used tascos (brkd30) and the bushnell micro dot (trophy trs-25).

On everything from a 10/22 ruger to a no1 ruger in a 30-06 to a ruger super redhawk in a .44mag............the tasco started to lose the center on the 30-06. I did not try tasco on the super redhawk.......

but the tascos held center on everything else (.22lr, .44mag rifle, and a 30-30 levergun). They are under 50 dollah........the bushnell is smaller by about 2 ounces and holds center on the heavier recoil...........

both have worked well for me but recently I've also gone to ghost ring systems since my eyes (but not necessarilly everything else) seem old......

those bushnells are from 80 to 100 dollah depending on the source....

I really like the bushnell micro dot. the dot may be starry but it is still usable. that starring seems to minimize with use..........I got one that's a perfect circle but it's a gamble on the internet. Some dots star more than others..........

Thanks BoogieMan, I'm gonna look into that one. If my mind server me correct, I think I picked one up at a gun show and thought it was pretty nice.

I have the SPARC on my PS90 and I'm quite happy with it.
 
I've tried several of the $100 and under red dots and they all ended up in the trash. Dots have been too big. Adjustment was next to impossible. Fire a shot that hit 2" high and move the settings 2 clicks down and the next shot was 2" right. Move it 2 clicks left and the next shot would be 3" low. After chasing groups all over a target I'd finally get it zeroed until the next range trip when it would be off by 6" again.

I did finally buy on of these for an AR.

At $200 it ain't cheap, but no more expensive than a decent scope. And it works. The adjustments were true and the dot is small enough to shoot 1.5" 100 yard groups.
 
Have the Aimpoint M1 on a Colt AR and love it!! Good intensity and great zero hold. Plus the battery lasts like....forever ;)
 
Just ordered the Baska 4x28, hopefully this won't be a disappointment. I always have bad luck when I order stuff, without looking at it. I have had several good reviews, so all should be good. Thanks for the info.

FWIW, with respect to optices, you only get what you pay for. In my experience, low end optics tend to be unreliable with a tendency to fail at the least convenient time.
 
I use a Millet red dot sight on my 870 SuperMag. This is a quality sight. I have tried the cheaper ones (Tasco, Buschnell, Simmons) and they have all come apart. Never got more than a couple of months out of them. Tried to send one (Simmons) back for repair, and they said that they were not made to withstand 3 1/2" turkey mags. The Millet was advertised as being made for heavy recoil. It has held up for 2 years without a problem. I believe I only paid around $70 from Midway at the time. Excellent product.
 
+1 for theVortex Sparc. I have one on my AR and LOVE IT. It has held zero very well. It is a little pricy for a .22. But it will grow with him as he moves on to bigger calibers.
