Red Dot Scope Question

Getting a Ruger 10/22 in a couple of days and am thinking about a Red Dot system. I have never used one in my life and don't know anything about them. Want something for a 100 yards. How precise are these and what can I expect from using one? Any info is greatly appreciated.

Red Dots

I find the "red dots" good for up close, 25 to 35 yards, and Ive killed lots of gophers with my 10-22 mounted with a Tasco ProPoint 5. 100 yards is askin alot, of both the 10-22 and the reddot, but my eyes are pretty old. At least the 10-22 can get alot of lead in the air, but IMHO you might want a bit of magnification at 100 yards, I know my eyes appreciate it.

The Propoint 5 allows you to adjust the "dot" size and thats a good feature, cause on bright days when you crank up the intensity the dot can get pretty large and fuzzy.

I disagree about magnification at 100 yards - at least with my Aimpoint even 100 yard precision (up to the level of an autoloading 308, anyway) is easy and without strain (both eyes open, bang bang). The magnification is for longer ranges; but in some ways magnification detracts from the ease of aiming (you progressively lose the ease of "two eyes", snap shooting, etc.

Battler.

Fading,
I shouldn't think you would have a problem out to 100 and a bit beyond. If you are still questioning the Red Dot http://www.midway.com has a number on sale now, cheap. I just bought a Simmons to mount on a Millet Scout style mount and a BSA laser for and SKS, (sorta found a SKS that was plan jane at the house). I paid $29.00 from a friend. Midway has them as cheap or up to about $60.00 for a 42mm scope.

Give it a shot for those prices, what are you goig to be out if you are unhappy. You could always sell it.

Good Luck

Plainsman,
Whoops you are right, sorry Fading if I got you lost. What the heck, I am a Reatlor. I am lost all the time, we just tell clients like this...Fading, I was just going to take you on the scenic route so you could see the area.
Just imagine if you will a Realtor with a lot of guns, now that is a scary thought.
