Red dot or HoloSight?

I want to outfit my open-sighted Ruger Mark II 6-7/8" BB autoloader .22 with either a red dot or holographic sight.

I wear eyeglasses and am nearsighted, and my lenses are the progressive bifocal type. Shooting with open sights, either with rifle or handgun, has not been easy for me, ever since I needed the correction for lack of ability to focus closer in.

Recently, I tried shooting my brother in law's .22 auto handgun outfitted with a red dot. What an improvement for me versus open sights!

Please give me the pros and cons of each type . . . red dot and holographic.

The difference between "red dots" and "holosights" is pretty much the method of imaging. The dots use a reflective surface inside the tube to display the dot on a focal plane, whilst the holo utilizes an imager on a single plane.

Pretty much, take a look through both types, and see what works best for your vision. Some people with astigmatism seem to have a harder time with the holo, although they do see the red dots as a figure 8/ghost image.

One other thing to keep in mind...weight. I too have bad eyes for iron sights. I put a red dot on my 22/45. Helped a lot, but the additional weight was not good for me. I'd compare the sight weight against each other. That may make your decision for you.

I agree with 9mm103 : weight.

In this case Mr. Davis, unless you plan on doing some serious competitive type shooting, a less expensive "small tube" Red Dot will do just fine on the MKII.

You can get them now for around $20-$50 depending on the brand.
