Red dot on a auto shotgun for hog hunt

Hi Guys,
I've been punching paper for years with both rifles (bolt and semi) and pistols. Never been on a hunt because I'm too cheap for a lease. A friend of mine has a ranch in the Texas panhandle and has a hog problem. He invited me to help him deal with it from a distance (300-500 yards) in January when his fields are clear.

I got to thinking (a dangerous thing I know) that I might be better off with my auto 12 gauge up close and personal and then use the rifle. Two questions:

1. Is the shotgun approach a viable option?
2. Since all hell is going to break loose after the first shot, is a red dot a good option on a Mossberg 930SPX?

If they are in open fields, you can't get close enough to use a shotgun effectively. They are one of the smartest and sometimes hardest to hunt animals, especially if you "educate" them.

Hog hunting is very addicting and when up close and personal it can be quite intimidating, they can be a tough kill when both yours and their adrenalin is flowing and a shotgun is a good choice.

For open fields, an AR is a much better choice.

Thanks for the advice Orphanedcowboy.

One more question, I do have an AR (POF 308) that is very accurate, but I also have a Savage 308 bolt rifle that is even more accurate. Which of the two rifles you think I should take? Or maybe I should take them all.

AR hands down, easier to pull a trigger than cycling a bolt. I built a specific AR in 6.8 just for hog hunting, quick detatch scope mount and flip up sights. I also have NV for it as well, just wish I had more time to chase them.
