i see alot of pictures and ive even seen a red dot system for a .50 bmg rifle, what type of shooting would you use a red dot on a .50 cal? my friend says they use them in the military also, but couldnt say why though. just wondering thanks

Coast Guard uses Eotech brand holo-sights on their M82A1 rifles from helicopters to disable boat engines.

Works exceedingly well in practice.

but no, you're not going to see red dots on m82a1 rifles outside of call of duty and the coast guard

and i don't know what the **** marco is rambling about. It's like some retirement home in Cali has this place set as its homepage on the resident computers.

i actually saw that episode with the coast guard snipers. i think it was in the documentary restrepo where i saw a red dot type optic on a .50 cal im not to sure though. i was just wondering why

My point was Red Dot systems are not used to set sniper records.

The Coast Guard's application of sniper shooting from a moving, vibrating helicopter, may be a niche market for whatever a "holo" sight is. I think it has very little in common with a red dot rifle sight.

I am happy you two watch the same channel on TV.:p

I prefer precision optics, over red dot systems.

Red dot sights are intended for use relatively close up. They are not intended to be used to set long distance shot records.

I don't understand why Marco has such a bee in his bonnet about this. It's not a simple question of better or worse, it's a question of better or worse for a specific purpose.

I would have thought a red dot would be wasted on a .50 bmg, but the Coast Guard example makes pretty good sense.

To the OP:
Probably most quality red dots would work just fine, such as an Aimpoint or with a similar Eotech holosight setup. Most that are rated for shotgun use would handle most 50 bmgs. This is because most .50 bmgs are braked/compensated enough in various ways to reduce the impulse down to levels that are not terribly bad despite the power of the platform. You could even go with ACOGs.

Now that we have completed my hijacking of this thread to factual discussion of long distance sniping

That is good because the original poster's question was:

what type of shooting would you use a red dot on a .50 cal?
and it was awnsered by Volucris in his first post in this thread.

I imagine that being bounced around in a chopper that is chaseing down a boat would make it hard to maintain a proper cheek weld. Red Dots and Holo sights are forgiving of this and that is most likely why they where chosen. I did see the special about the Coast Guard snipers and they didn't seem to be shooting farther than 100 yards with them. That is well inside the range of the EoTech.

I am expecting a new 50BMG Shorty this week where I fully intend to Holo Sight on it asthe range is only 100 yards Just want to try it out. The 1000 yard range is 5 hours away.

Red Dot and Holo

1. Red Dot and Holo are NOT the same thing.
2. Red dot systems MAY be useful for rapid target acquisition. You should try one. I, personally did, and was not impressed.
3. Holo sights used in a copter are a specialized application. Look for one after you get the copter.
4. Precision optic systems (riflescopes), IMO, are VASTLY superior. Even cheaper optic systems with magnification and objective focus (even Tasco) are more useful.

You are not missing anything. But try one to satisfy your curiosity. Oh, and they are Tacti-kewl!. Get a black one!

Why do I see all of these pictures of US troops with Aimpoints on their M4's? Shouldn't they know better?

kozak, it's a "most common distance" thing. When minute of cranium is adequate, and distances are inside, generally, of around 400 yards, 4X is plenty of magnification.

Enough. OP's been answered...
