Red dot on 12 guage?

My Dad gave me a Tasco Accudot that he was using on his bow. He didnt like it and went back to his old sights. I was wondering, will it hold up if I put it on my 870 for turkey hunting? I plan on tapping the reciever and adding a scope base. Also, I use 3inch mags.
