Scopes are no problem, but I am trying out a Red Dot on a 16 in carbine AR. This is not a brand question, but at what range do you set your 1 power Red Dot at??

Thank you for your help.
Jim

I sight in for zero at 100 yds. I use the red dot mostly within 150 yds with occasional use to 200 yds.It should be within 2.5" either below or above zero out to at least 150 yds. At 200 yds my 2MOA dot is covering 4 inches.

If you plan to shoot mostly within 100 yds you may want to use a 50 yd zero.

For me I use a trijicon reflex 6.5 moa, so even at 100 yards the dot covers over 6 inches. Ill get palm size groupings at 100 with russian crap.

If youll be shooting up to 150-175 then a 50 or 100 yard zero will work well.

Looking at the charts, that's what looks good to 150 yards. I don't see me using it much beyond that.

Thanks
Jim

I have mine zeroed at 43 yards. Because that is the width of the field right below the house.:D

It is good for +/- 3 inches out to 300 yards.

Good enough for what I use it for.

I use a 25yd zero for all my ARs. Any defensive situations are likely to be at even shorter ranges than that, and even if not, it's within a few inches all the way out to 300 yards or so.

Just zero it to you MPBR. So you can put it on target and hit out with no hold over. If you were to zero at 50 you'd only have a 1.7" drop at 200 yards. If you zeroed at 25 yards you'd be almost dead on at 275 yards, but you'd have a 4 inch rise at 150 yards. This all using bullet flight app and the 55grn round

Both my AR, and my son's 7mm-08 are zeroed for 50 yards.

I sighted my wifes 12x scoped AR in 2" high at 100yds...

Not exactly. With 5.56 (M193/M855) and a 16" barrel, a 25 yard near zero will give you a far zero close to 300 yards, but you'll be 8" high at 100-150 yards.

A 50 yard zero will give you a far zero close to 225 yards, and you'll be within 2" of your point of aim from 10 yards to 250 yards.

Whatever you do, DON'T zero for 100 yards. At 100 yards you'll be at the peak of the ballistic arc and at every other range you'll be low...

That's pretty close to the 50 yard/225 yard zero. If your range is long enough, I'd zero at 200 yards, then you'll know for certain that you're good to within 2" from close range to about 250 yards...

I'm not so sure about this poll or the meaning of the question. Granted, I did not read any of the replies. There is a cross-over point. If you "zero" at say 25 yards, then down range the bullet crosses over and is "zero" once again some number of yards down range. In my case, I zero the rifle to be 3 inches high at 100 yards.

I use a 100 yard zero on my red-dot equipped carbines. I've tried the 50/200 yard zero (and actually shooting it at 50 yards AND 200 yards) and for me, and what I do, I like the 100 yard zero best.

I know my hold-overs and hold-unders well with the 100 yd. zero. I typically don't shoot beyond 200 yards with a red dot. Most of my carbine shooting is done from 7 to 50 yards.

To the OP, what is your primary purpose you'll be shooting the red dot equipped carbine for? Target shooting? Training? Plinking?

My EOTech is zeroed at 25 yards but that's on a crossbow :p
Iron sights on all my carbines and scopes on the bolt actions.
