Recreational hunting off-limits
at Metroparks

MILFORD, Mich. (AP) -- The Huron-Clinton
Metropolitan Authority has ruled that there will be
no open or recreational hunting in any of the
Metroparks.
Commissioners for the authority, which manages
the Metroparks in Oakland, Wayne, Washtenaw
and Livingston counties, adopted on a 4-0 vote
Thursday a wildlife management policy that
includes the recreational hunting ban.
"I'm hoping that this wildlife management policy
will be a step in the right direction for the
Metroparks and for the wildlife in the
Metroparks," said Judy Brock, president of the
Metroparks Deer Preservation Council.
Brock and others have expressed concern that
controlled deer hunts at Stony Creek and Hudson
Mills Metroparks were a "Trojan horse" designed
to open the parks to sport hunts.
That was not the case, David Moilanen, a
spokesman for the Metroparks, told The Oakland
Press of Pontiac for an article Friday. "The goal is
not to get recreational hunting into this park."
The wildlife management policy allows wildlife
reductions to be made in accordance with state
statutes, local ordinances, Natural Resources
Commission approval and state Department of
Natural Resources wildlife management guidelines.
The policy provides that wildlife management
plans be developed to maintain biodiversity in the
parks and leaves the door open for lethal control
options like controlled hunts at Stony Creek and
Hudson Mills and sharpshooting at Kensington
Metropark.
