recommendations on single shot .22

I am looking for a bolt action, single shot that will take shorts through long rifle. Prefferably long, long barrel and must be grooved for scope mounting. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Any single-shot will shoot any length of .22 rimfire.

Long, long barrel? I think you're going to have to look for an older rifle. Almost all of the singles I've seen of recent manufacture are "youth" critters, with accordingly short barrels.

You might consider buying a box-magazine repeater and making a cover-plate for covering the well. A little creative tinsnip work with some beer-can aluminum, and a couple of drops of superglue...

Hi nedfig,

Why don't you look into the current import Polish Training .22 being offered for sale by SOG for $99.95.

The thing is modeled after the Mosin-Nagant M44. Looks like a military type trainer should. Built very strong. I could not believe how solid it is built. The one I got (handpicked, $10 extra) was in VG-Exc condition. Has adjustable sights out to 100m, has the beefiest extractor/ejector I have ever seen on any rifle.
Shoots like a dream, very crisp trigger and very accurate. You could do a lot worse in single shot .22 rifle selection than one of these.

The best and most accurate .22 I have owned is an old Winchester Model 67, single shot with manual cocking bolt. It handles all the rounds, S,L,LR. Typically see them for sell for $125-150. It is not grooved for a scope, but the iron sights work just fine. I would love to have another new one in the box.

nedfig - On the subject of barrel length, out of curiosity why do you want a long, long one? The .22 is just about the only rifle that actually suffers with a long barrel. Bullet velocity starts dropping off in barrels longer than 16 to 20 inches depending on the round. I'm not absolutely sure about accuracy, because there are so many combinations possible of ammo and barrel, but I believe in general from everything I've tried, the shorter barrels (16" - 20") are usually more accurate than longer barrels.

I was thinking that the longer barrel would give more time for the powder to burn off thus reducing muzzle flash and sound. I would prefer the 16" barrel, but sound is a consideration in this case. A guy at work has a Winchester Model 60 that I have been trying to acquire, but he want's to look into it's value and charge me top dollar. So i'm off to the pawn shop's for now.

Ah ha! If sound is the issue then you are right in looking for a longer barrel. My 24" Marlin sounds like an airgun with 22 shorts.

Ah, so! "Squirrel Stew Without Disturbing The Neighbors"; it begins to come clear! Voice of experience: Those little .22 CBs do just fine, thank you!

Try to find Russian-made TOZ-12. I bought one 4 years ago
for $125. 27" bull barrel, very nice action, crisp trigger
and stuff. Buttstock is a bit short, 'cause it was intended
to be used as a "youth" target rifle. Shoots 2.5" groups
at 100 yards with Federal HV from Walmart(with 8x40 scope)
and under 1.5" with decent target ammo.

If your hitting the pawn shops look for an old Ithica model 49. It is a lever action single shot. Good iron sights and will handle shorts. A scope might be a problem but one in good shape should cost well under $100.
